          วันที่ 10 มกราคม 2559 นายจตุพร พรหมพันธุ์ ประธาน นปช. กล่าวในรายการมองไกล ถึงกรณีที่พระพุทธะอิสระ เจ้าอาวาสวัดอ้อน้อย จ.นครปฐม ออกมาเคลื่อนไหวคัดค้านการแต่งตั้งสมเด็จพระมหารัชมังคลาจารย์ หรือสมเด็จช่วง เจ้าอาวาสวัดปากน้ำ เป็นสมเด็จพระสังฆราชองค์ใหม่ ว่า ประเทศไทยมีแนวโน้มเกิดความขัดแย้งครั้งใหญ่ในวงการสงฆ์ เนื่องจากพระพุทธะอิสระ และพวก มีการเคลื่อนไหวเกี่ยวกับเรื่องนี้อย่างเป็นระบบ โดยเรียกกลุ่มตัวเองว่า เครือข่ายชาวพุทธปกป้องศาสนา เพื่อคัดค้านการแต่งตั้งสมเด็จช่วง เป็นสมเด็จพระสังฆราช องค์ที่ 20 โดยอ้างว่า สมเด็จช่วง เป็นพระอุปัชฌาย์ของพระธัมมชโย เจ้าอาวาสวัดพระธรรมกาย ซึ่งมีข้อกล่าวหาในคดีวัดพระธรรมกายที่รอการพิสูจน์จำนวนมาก จึงไม่เหมาะสมที่จะขึ้นเป็นสมเด็จพระสังฆราช
 
          ดังนั้น สิ่งที่พระพุทธะอิสระ เคลื่อนไหวถือเป็นการสร้างความขัดแย้ง ซึ่งคณะรักษาความสงบแห่งชาติ (คสช.) ไม่เคยห้ามหรือเรียกตัวมาปรับทัศนคติ และไม่กล่าวหาว่าฝ่าฝืนคำสั่ง คสช. รวมถึงไม่เคยตั้งข้อหาชุมนุมเกิน 5 คน อีกทั้งคณะสงฆ์ได้ปฏิบัติตามกฎหมายคณะสงฆ์ที่ระบุชัดเจนว่า ต้องเสนอเจ้าคุณสมเด็จที่มีความอาวุโสโดยสมณศักดิ์ขึ้นเป็นสมเด็จพระสังฆราช ยกเว้นทรงอาพาธไม่สามารถปฏิบัติหน้าที่ได้ แต่การที่พระพุทธะอิสระออกมาต่อต้าน จึงอาจทำให้ลุกลามกลายเป็นสงครามกลางเมืองได้ การจะล้มการแต่งตั้งสมเด็จพระสังฆราชนั้น จะเป็นการเคลื่อนไหวเพื่อเล่นงานพระฝ่ายมหานิกาย จะกลายเป็นชนวนใหญ่ของประเทศ ใหญ่กว่าอุทยานราชภักดิ์ ใหญ่กว่าการแก้ไขปัญหาชาวสวนยาง ใหญ่กว่าการแก้ไขปัญหาชาวนา และใหญ่กว่ารถไฟไทย-จีน
