มหาวิทยาลัยได้เริ่มโครงการขยายการศึกษามายังจังหวัดสุราษฎร์ธานีตั้งแต่ปี 2533 โดยเริ่มตั้งแต่การจัดตั้งคณะทำงานศึกษาความเป็นไปได้ของโครงการ คณะทำงานเตรียมความพร้อมด้านต่าง ๆ ซึ่งจากการศึกษาพบว่าจังหวัดสุราษฎร์ธานีมีศักยภาพด้านต่าง ๆ สูงเหมาะสมที่จะจัดตั้งสถานศึกษาระดับสูงรองรับการพัฒนาทั้งทางด้านเศรษฐกิจและสังคม ประกอบกับจังหวัดสุราษฎร์ธานีเอง โดยข้าราชการ พ่อค้า ประชาชน โดยเฉพาะอย่างยิ่งภาคเอกชน ได้ให้ความสนับสนุนอย่างจริงจัง โครงการจัดตั้งวิทยาเขตสุราษฎร์ธานีจึงพัฒนาได้โดยเร็ว ซึ่งอาจสรุปลำดับผลการดำเนินงานที่ผ่านมาได้ดังนี้
