พิบัติภัยจากคลื่นสึนามิเมื่อวันที่ 26 ธันวาคม พ.ศ.2547 ถือเป็นภัยธรรมชาติร้ายแรงมากที่สุดเท่าที่ประเทศไทยเคยได้รับถึงแม้ว่าจำนวนผู้เสียชีวิตจะมากเป็นอันดับ4 รองจากประเทศอินโดนีเซีย,ศรีลังกาและอินเดียก็ตาม การที่พิบัติภัยจากคลื่นสึนามิมีความรุนแรงมากเป็นเพราะสาเหตุต่างๆ ดังนี้ 1.ประเทศไทยยังไม่มีระบบเตือนภัยคลื่นสึนามิและขาดเจ้าหน้าที่ซึ่งมีความรู้ความชำนาญเกี่ยวกับเรื่องคลื่นสึนามิโดยตรง ทั้งนี้เนื่องจากในบริเวณทะเลอันดามันไม่เคยเกิดพิบัติภัยจากคลื่นสึนามิมาก่อน ประเทศไทยและประเทศอื่นๆที่อยู่ติดชายฝั่งทะเลอันดามันจึงขาดการระมัดระวังป้องกันภัยไม่เหมือนกับประเทศที่อยู่ในบริเวณมหาสมุทรแปซิฟิกซึ่งมีการสร้างระบบเตือนภัยจากคลื่นสึนามิไว้เรียบร้อยแล้ว ในตอนเช้าของวันที่ 26 ธันวาคม กรมอุตุนิยมวิทยาซึ่งมีเครื่องตรวจจับความสั่นสะเทือนของแผ่นเปลือกโลกจากแผ่นดินไหวอยู่ที่สำนักงานได้ทราบว่าเกิดแผ่นดินไหวขึ้นที่บริเวณนอกฝั่งตะวันตกของหัวเกาะสุมาตราจึงได้ออกประกาศแจ้งให้ประชาชนทราบแต่มิได้มีการเตือนภัยว่าจะมีคลื่นสึนามิเกิดขึ้น เพราะไม่มีเครื่องมือตรวจวัดความสูงของคลื่นในทะเลและเจ้าหน้าที่ก็ไม่ได้มีความรู้ความชำนาญเกี่ยวกับเรื่องคลื่นสึนามิด้วย ดังนั้นเมื่อเกิดคลื่นสึนามิขึ้นที่เกาะสุมาตราและกำลังเคลื่อนตัวเข้ามาที่พื้นที่ชายฝั่งภาคใต้ของไทยจึงไม่มีการแจ้งเตือนภัยให้ประชาชนในท้องถิ่นได้ทราบล่วงหน้าทำให้เกิดความสูญเสียเป็นจำนวนมาก
