อุทยานแห่งชาติ แก่งตะนะ  อุทยานแห่งชาติแก่งตะนะ ตั้งอยู่ในท้องที่อำเภอโขงเจียม จังหวัดอุบลราชธานี สภาพพื้นที่โดยทั่วไป เป็นที่ราบสูง เป็นเขาเตี้ยๆ มีแม่น้ำมูลและแม่น้ำโขงไหลผ่านตามแนวเขตทางด้านทิศเหนือ ไปออกประเทศสาธารณรัฐประชาธิปไตยประชาชนลาว บริเวณแก่งตะนะจะมีสายน้ำที่เชี่ยวและลึก อีกทั้งยังมีถ้ำใต้น้ำหลายแห่ง จึงทำให้มีปลาอาศัยอยู่ชุกชุม ตรงกลางมีโขดหินขนาดใหญ่เป็นเกาะกลาง มีเนื้อที่ประมาณ 80 ตารางกิโลเมตร หรือ 50,000 ไร่

          จากการสำรวจของจังหวัดอุบลราชธานี เห็นว่า ป่าดงหินกอง มีสภาพพื้นที่เหมาะสมเพื่อจัดตั้งเป็นอุทยานแห่งชาติ กรมป่าไม้ดำเนินการสำรวจ พบว่า ป่าดงหินกองมีสภาพป่าสมบูรณ์ และมีธรรมชาติสวยงามหลายแห่ง แต่เป็นป่าโครงการเพื่อการใช้สอยเอนกประสงค์ของราษฎรจังหวัดอุบลราชธานี จึงเห็นควรกำหนดพื้นที่ป่าดงหินกอง เฉพาะบางส่วนบริเวณรอบๆ แก่งตะนะและน้ำตกตาดโตน เนื้อที่ประมาณ 12 ตร.กม. ให้เป็นวนอุทยานป่าดงหินกอง ตามคำสั่งที่ 2428/2522 ลงวันที่ 7 ธันวาคม 2522
