ภาษาอินโดนีเซียเป็นทำเนียบภาษามาตรฐานของภาษามลายูรีเยา[2][3] ซึ่งแม้จะมีชื่อเรียกเช่นนั้นแต่ก็ไม่ใช่ภาษามลายูที่เป็นสำเนียงท้องถิ่นของหมู่เกาะรีเยา แต่หมายถึงภาษามลายูคลาสสิกที่ใช้ในราชสำนักของรัฐสุลต่านมะละกา[4] จากเดิมที่มีผู้ใช้กันในภาคตะวันออกเฉียงเหนือของเกาะสุมาตรา[5] ภาษามลายูได้กลายเป็นภาษากลางในบริเวณหมู่เกาะที่เป็นประเทศอินโดนีเซียในปัจจุบันมาหลายร้อยปี จารึกเกอดูกันบูกิตเป็นหลักฐานที่เก่าที่สุดที่ใช้ภาษามลายูโบราณซึ่งเป็นภาษาราชการในสมัยจักรวรรดิศรีวิชัย ตั้งแต่ราวพุทธศตวรรษที่ 12 เป็นต้นมา ภาษามลายูโบราณได้มีการใช้ในหมู่เกาะอินโดนีเซีย เห็นได้จากจารึกสมัยศรีวิชัย และจารึกอื่น ๆ ตามบริเวณชายฝั่ง เช่นที่เกาะชวา การติดต่อค้าขายโดยชาวพื้นเมืองในเวลานั้นเป็นสื่อกลางในการแพร่กระจายของภาษามลายูโบราณในฐานะภาษาทางการค้า และกลายเป็นภาษากลางที่มีผู้ใช้อย่างแพร่หลายในบริเวณหมู่เกาะ[6][7]
