สมเด็จพระศรีนครินทราบรมราชชนนีทรงได้รับการเฉลิมพระเกียรติเป็น พระมารดาแห่งการแพทย์ชนบท และพระมารดาแห่งการสังคมสงเคราะห์ พระองค์ทรงสนพระทัยในเรื่องสุขภาพของประชาชนตลอดมา ดังเห็นได้จากการที่พระองค์ท่านได้มีพระมหากรุณาธิคุณก่อตั้งหน่วยแพทย์อาสาซึ่งมีแพทย์ ทันต-แพทย์ พยาบาล เภสัช และประชาชนในสาขาวิชาชีพอื่นๆ ร่วม เป็นอาสาสมัครในการให้บริการรักษาประชาชนที่ มีปัญหาป่วยไข้และอยู่ห่างไกลสถานพยาบาล ตั้งแต่ ปี 2512 จนถึงปัจจุบัน
ในปี 2529 มูลนิธิแพทย์อาสาสมเด็จพระศรีนครินทราบรมราชชนนี ได้ประสานงานกับ กระทรวงสา-ธารณสุข คณะทันตแพทย์ศาสตร์ทุกมหาวิทยาลัย ทันตแพทย์สมาคมแห่งประเทศไทย และกรุงเทพมหานคร จัดกิจกรรมรณรงค์ทันตสาธารณสุข เพื่อถวายเป็นพระราชกุศลเนื่องในวโรกาสวัน พระราชสมภพ วันที่ 21 ตุลาคม 2529 เป็นครั้งแรกโดยระดมทันตบุคคลากรและอาสาสมัครจากภาค รัฐบาลและเอกชนทั่วประเทศออกไปให้บริการตรวจรักษาฟันโดยไม่คิดมูลค่าแก่ประชาชนใน ถิ่นทุรกันดารห่างไกลคมนาคม
