งานวิจัยนี้ศึกษาการบำบัดขยะมูลฝอยด้วยวิธีเชิงกล-ชีวภาพ (Mechanical Biological Treatment : MBT) โดยใช้ขยะมูลฝอยภายในชุมชนมหาวิทยาลัยนเรศวรมาทำการบำบัด และตั้งกองด้วยวิธีกั้นกอง แล้วบำบัดขยะมูลฝอยด้วยวิธี Passively Aerated Windrow ทำการวิเคราะห์สมบัติทางเคมี-กายภาพ และค่าความร้อนของขยะมูลฝอยระหว่างการบำบัดเป็นระยะเวลา 4 เดือน พบว่า การบำบัดขยะมูลฝอยด้วยวิธีเชิงกล-ชีวภาพ (MBT) ที่ระยะเวลาบำบัด 3 เดือน คุณสมบัติทางเคมีและกายภาพของขยะมูลฝอยเริ่มคงที่ ส่วนค่าความร้อนของขยะมูลฝอยที่ผ่านการบำบัดจากการวิเคราะห์ค่าความร้อน และ Proximate Analysis พบว่าขยะมูลฝอยที่ผ่านการบำบัดเป็นระยะเวลา 1 เดือน มีความเป็นไปได้ที่จะนำไปใช้ผลิตเป็นเชื้อเพลิงแปรรูปต่อไป เนื่องจากค่าความร้อนที่วิเคราะห์ได้จะเพิ่มขึ้นอย่างรวดเร็วภายในระยะเวลา 1 เดือน หลังจากนั้นค่าความร้อนเริ่มคงที่ อีกทั้งงานวิจัยนี้ยังทำการศึกษาการนำขยะมูลฝอยที่ผ่านการบำบัดด้วยวิธีเชิงกล-ชีวภาพ(MBT) ระยะเวลา 4 เดือน มาผสมกับถ่านไม้ในอัตราส่วนต่างๆเพื่อผลิตเป็นเชื้อเพลิงแปรรูป ทำการวิเคราะห์ค่าความร้อนและมลพิษที่เกิดขึ้นจากการเผาในเตากลางแจ้ง พบว่า ค่าความร้อนของขยะมูลฝอยที่นำมาผสมกับถ่านไม้ มีค่าความร้อนสูงกว่าค่าความร้อนของขยะมูลฝอยที่ไม่ได้ทำการผสมกับถ่านไม้ และมลพิษที่เกิดขึ้นจากการเผาเชื้อเพลิงแปรรูปที่ผลิตได้แต่ละอัตราส่วนในเตากลางแจ้ง พบว่ามลพิษที่เกิดขึ้นมีค่าใกล้เคียงกับค่ามลพิษที่เกิดจากการเผาถ่านไม้ในเตากลางแจ้งจากการวิเคราะห์สมบัติทางเคมี-กายภาพ และค่าความร้อน ทางผู้วิจัยมีความคิดเห็นว่ากระบวนการบำบัดขยะด้วยกรรมวิธีเชิงกล – ชีวภาพ (MBT) โดยบำบัดด้วยวิธี Passive Aerated Windrow มีความเหมาะสมที่จะนำไปบำบัดขยะมูลฝอยภายในชุมชน อีกทั้งมีความเป็นไปได้ที่จะนำขยะมูลฝอยหลังผ่านการบำบัดมาพัฒนาเป็นเชื้อเพลิงแปรรูปเพื่อนำไปใช้แทนหรือใช้ร่วมกับเชื้อเพลิงฟอสซิลต่อไป
