ปฏิญญากรุงเทพฯ ได้ระบุวัตถุประสงค์สำคัญ 7 ประการของการจัดตั้งอาเซียน ได้แก่
1. ส่งเสริมความร่วมมือและความช่วยเหลือซึ่งกันและกันในทางเศรษฐกิจ สังคม วัฒนธรรม เทคโนโลยี
วิทยาศาสตร์ และการบริหาร
2. ส่งเสริมสันติภาพและความมั่นคงส่วนภูมิภาค
3. เสริมสร้างความเจริญรุ่งเรืองทางเศรษฐกิจพัฒนาการทางวัฒนธรรมในภูมิภาค
4. ส่งเสริมให้ประชาชนในอาเซียนมีความเป็นอยู่และคุณภาพชีวิตที่ดี
5. ให้ความช่วยเหลือซึ่งกันและกัน ในรูปของการฝึกอบรมและการวิจัย และส่งเสริมการศึกษาด้านเอเชียตะวันออกเฉียงใต้
6. เพิ่มประสิทธิภาพของการเกษตรและอุตสาหกรรม การขยายการค้า ตลอดจนการปรับปรุงการขนส่งและการคมนาคม
7. เสริมสร้างความร่วมมืออาเซียนกับประเทศภายนอก องค์การ ความร่วมมือแห่งภูมิภาคอื่นๆ
และองค์การระหว่างประเทศ
ตลอดระยะเวลา กว่า 40ปีที่มีการก่อตั้งอาเซียน ถือว่าได้ประสบความสำเร็จจนเป็นที่ยอมรับจากหลายฝ่าย ไม่ว่าจะเป็นด้านการเมืองเเละความมั่นคง ด้านเศรษฐกิจและการพัฒนาด้านสังคมและวัฒนธรรม ซึ่งประเทศไทยได้รับ ประโยชน์อย่างมากจากความร่วมือต่างๆของอาเซียน ไม่ว่าจะเป็นประโยชน์จากการที่ภูมิภาค เป็นเสถียรภาพและสันติภาพ อันเป็นผลจากกรอบความร่วมมือด้านการเมืองและความมั่นคง ความร่วมมือด้านเศรษฐกิจ ความร่วมือด้านสังคมและ วัฒนธรรม ซึ่งถ้าหากไม่มีความร่วมมือเหล่านี้แล้ว คงเป็นการยากที่จะพัฒนาประเทศได้โดยลำพัง

วัตถุประสงค์
ปฏิญญา อาเซียน (The ASEAN Declaration) ได้ระบุว่า เป้าหมายและจุดประสงค์ของอาเซียน คือ
1) เร่งรัดการเจริญเติบโตทางเศรษฐกิจ ความก้าวหน้าทางสังคมและการพัฒนาวัฒนธรรมในภูมิภาค
2) ส่งเสริมสันติภาพและเสถียรภาพในภูมิภาค โดยการเคารพหลักความยุติธรรมและ หลักนิติธรรมในการดำเนินความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างประเทศในภูมิภาค ตลอดจนยึดมั่นในหลักการแห่งกฎบัตรสหประชาชาติ
ใน โอกาสครบรอบ 30 ปีของการก่อตั้งอาเซียน ในปี 2540 (ค.ศ.1997) ผู้นำของประเทศสมาชิกอาเซียนได้รับรอง “วิสัยทัศน์อาเซียน 2020” (ASEAN Vision 2020) โดยเห็นพ้องกันในวิสัยทัศน์ร่วมของอาเซียนที่จะเป็นวงสมานฉันท์ในภูมิภาค ตะวันออกเฉียงใต้ ต้องการมีปฏิสัมพันธ์กับภายนอก การใช้ชีวิตในสภาพที่มีสันติภาพ เสถียรภาพ และความเจริญรุ่งเรือง ผูกมัดกันเป็นหุ้นส่วนในการพัฒนา ที่มีพลวัตและในประชาคมที่มีความเอื้ออาทรระหว่างกันปี 2546 ผู้นำอาเซียนได้เห็นพ้องกันที่จะจัดตั้งประชาคมอาเซียนที่ประกอบด้วย 3 เสาหลัก อันได้แก่ ประชาคมการเมืองและความมั่นคงอาเซียน (ASEAN Political-Security Community–ASC) ประชาคมเศรษฐกิจอาเซียน (ASEAN Economic Community-AEC) และประชาคมสังคม-วัฒนธรรมอาเซียน (ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community-ASCC) ภายในปี 2563 ต่อมา ในการประชุม สุดยอดอาเซียน ครั้งที่ 12 ที่เมืองเซบู ฟิลิปปินส์ ผู้นำประเทศอาเซียนตกลงที่จะเร่งรัดกระบวนการสร้างประชาคมอาเซียนให้แล้ว เสร็จภายในปี 2558
วัตถุประสงค์ของอาเซียน
