แต่เดิมชาวลีซอมีถิ่นฐานอยู่บริเวณต้นน้ำสาละวินและแม่น้ำโขงทางตอนเหนือของธิเบต และทางตะวันตกเฉียงเหนือของมณฑลยูนาน ประเทศสาธารณรัฐประชาชนจีน ชาวลีซอได้อพยพเข้าสู่เขตประเทศไทยเมื่อประมาณปี พ.ศ. 2462 – 2464
