เป็นมหากาพย์เรื่องที่สองของโฮเมอร์ต่อจากมหากาพย์เรื่องแรก คือมหากาพย์อีเลียด (Iliad) ที่บรรยายเรื่องระหว่างสงครามโทรจัน ส่วนโอดิสเสย์จะบรรยายเหตุการณ์ หลังสงครามโทรจันเป็นสองตอนคือ
