ประมาณปี 2020 จะมีคนเรียนภาษาอังกฤษทั่วโลกเพิ่มขึ้นถึง 2 พันล้านคน

เดวิด แกรดดอล (Davis Graddol) นักภาษาศาสตร์ประยุกต์ชาวอังกฤษผู้ทำงานวิจัยเรื่อง “English Next (2006)” ให้กับ British Council กล่าวถึงแนวโน้มของภาษาอังกฤษว่า นับจากนี้ไปจำนวนผู้เรียนภาษาอังกฤษทั่วโลกจะขยายตัวเพิ่มขึ้นอย่างต่อเนื่อง และคาดว่าในอีก 10 – 15 ปีข้างหน้า (ประมาณปี 2015 - 2020) จำนวนผู้เรียนจะเพิ่มสูงสุดถึง 2 พันล้านคน ข้อมูลจากงานวิจัยนี้ได้สะท้อนให้เห็นว่าผู้คนบนโลกนี้ต่างตระหนักถึงความสำคัญของภาษาอังกฤษในสังคมโลกยุคใหม่
