โรงเรียนบดินทรเดชา (สิงห์ สิงหเสนี) สมุทรปราการ เดิมชื่อ โรงเรียนสมุทรพิทยาคม จัดตั้งขึ้นเมื่อวันที่ 4 มกราคม 2525 (วันสถาปนาโรงเรียน)เนื่องจากการเคหะแห่งชาติได้จัดสร้างเมืองใหม่บางพลี ที่อำเภอบางเสาธง จังหวัดสมุทรปราการ เพื่อรองรับการขยายตัวของชุมชน โดยมีการวางผังเมืองให้มีเขตที่พักอาศัย ตลาดสด อาคารพาณิชย์ โรงพยาบาล สนามกีฬา สวนสาธารณะ สถานีตำรวจ ระบบสาธารณูปโภคได้แก่ ไฟฟ้า น้ำประปา โทรศัพท์ ไปรษณีย์ ระบบระบายน้ำ ถนนภายในเมือง ในด้านการศึกษาให้มีโรงเรียน 37 แห่ง ตั้งแต่ระดับอนุบาล ประถมศึกษา มัธยมศึกษา อาชีวศึกษา ดังนั้นกรมสามัญศึกษาจึงประกาศจัดตั้งโรงเรียนสมุทรพิทยาคม เป็นโรงเรียนสหศึกษา
ตั้งแต่ปี พ.ศ. 2525 ถึงปัจจุบัน โรงเรียนมีการพัฒนา และเปลี่ยนแปลงมาโดยตลอด ทั้งในด้านอาคารสถานที่และการจัดการศึกษาของโรงเรียน โดยได้รับคัดเลือกเป็นโรงเรียนรางวัล พระราชทานขนาดกลาง ประจำปีการศึกษา 2544 มีนักเรียนที่จบในระดับชั้นมัธยมศึกษาปีที่ 6 สอบเข้าเรียนต่อในสถาบันศึกษาต่าง ๆ คิดเป็น ร้อยละ 90 และได้มีการประกาศเปลี่ยนชื่อโรงเรียน เมื่อวันที่ 16 กรกฎาคม 2551 โรงเรียนมีแนวคิดว่า…การศึกษาทำให้บุคคลได้พัฒนาสติ ปัญญา ความรู้ ความสามารถของตนเอง เมื่อบุคคลได้พัฒนาคนดีแล้วก็สามารถนำความรู้ไปพัฒนาสังคม ประเทศชาติให้เจริญก้าวหน้าต่อไป สอดคล้องกับอัตลักษณ์ของโรงเรียนที่ว่า “ลูกบดินทรเป็นผู้ประพฤติดีและมีความรู้ “
