ทั้งนี้ สมาคมวิทยาศาสตร์แห่งประเทศไทยในพระบรมราชูปถัมภ์ มีแนวคิดว่าน่าจะถือเอาวันที่ 18 สิงหาคม เป็น วันวิทยาศาสตร์ ไทย ต่อมาวันที่ 14 เมษายน พ.ศ.2525 คณะรัฐมนตรีได้มีมติเทิดพระเกียรติพระบาทสมเด็จพระจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัวเป็น "พระบิดาแห่งวิทยาศาสตร์ไทย" พร้อมทั้งกำหนดให้วันที่ 18 สิงหาคม เป็น "วันวิทยาศาสตร์แห่งชาติ" และต่อมาได้มีการสร้าง "อุทยานวิทยาศาสตร์" ที่ บ้านหว้ากอ เนื่องในการสถาปนาวันวิทยาศาสตร์แห่งชาติ
