ทางวัดได้จัดให้มีมัคคุเทศก์น้อยนำชม อธิบายภาพเขียนต่าง ๆ รวมทั้งสิ่งของที่จัดแสดงไว้ เพื่อความเข้าใจในเรื่องราวต่าง ๆ ได้ดียิ่งขึ้นพระมหาธาตุแก่นนครต้องอยู่ริม "บึงแก่นนคร" เดิมทีบึงแห่งนี้มีชื่อว่า "บึงบอนขอนแก่น" เป็นภาษาที่ชาวบ้านใช้เรียกตามสภาพที่เห็น คือมีต้นบอนขึ้นอยู่มาก และที่ต้องต่อท้ายด้วยขอนแก่น ก็เพราะว่า บึงแห่งนี้มีขอนไม้ล้มจมน้ำอยู่ในบึง ต่อมาเมื่อมีการย้ายเมืองขอนแก่น จากฝั่งตะวันตกของบึงบอนขอนแก่น มาอยู่ทางฝั่งตะวันออก ชาวบ้านจึงเรียกบึงแห่งนี้ว่า บึงเมืองเก่า
