เป็นอุทยานที่มีพื้นที่กว้างใหญ่ที่สุดของประเทศไทย  มีพื้นที่ถึง  2,915  ตารางกิโลเมตร  หรือ 1.8 ล้านไร่   ได้รับการประกาศให้เป็นเขตอุทยานแห่งชาติ เมื่อวันที่ 12 มิถุนายน 2524  โดยกำหนดพื้นที่บริเวณอ่างเก็บน้ำและป่าเหนือเขื่อนแก่งกระจานเป็นเขตอุทยานฯ  เป็นต้นน้ำลำธารของแม่น้ำหลายสาย พื้นที่ส่วนใหญ่ของอุทยานฯ เป็นภูเขาสลับซับซ้อนอยู่ในเทือกเขาตะนาวศรี สภาพภูมิประเทศเป็นป่าดิบชื้น  ยอดเขาที่สูงที่สุดในอุทยานฯ คือยอดเขางะงันนิกยวงตอง อยู่ในเขตรอยต่อประเทศพม่าและไทย มีความสูง 1,513 เมตร รองลงมาคือยอดเขาพะเนินทุ่ง ซึ่งมีความสูง 1,207 เมตร จากระดับน้ำทะเลปานกลาง  จากสันเขื่อนแก่งกระจาน มีถนนเลียบออกมาทางซ้ายมือเป็นระยะทาง 3 กิโลเมตร ถึงที่ทำการฯ  อุทยานแห่งชาติแก่งกระจานได้รับรางวัลอุตสาหกรรมการท่องเที่ยวประจำปี 2551 รางวัลยอดเยี่ยม ประเภทแหล่งท่องเที่ยวธรรมชาติ
