          การค้นหาแหล่งความรู้ต่างๆ ทั่วโลกผ่านทางเครือข่ายอินเตอร์เน็ต ทำให้ผู้ใช้สามารถค้นหาข้อมูลต่างๆ ที่ต้องการได้อย่างสะดวกรวดเร็ว และตรงกับความต้องการมากที่สุด ห้องสมุดเป็นหน่วยงานซึ่งมีหน้าที่รวบรวม จัดเก็บ และให้บริการสารสนเทศ เพื่อการศึกษาค้นคว้าแก่อาจารย์ นักศึกษา นักวิจัย และบุคลากรของสถาบัน   ดังนั้นเมื่อมีการพัฒนาของเทคโนโลยีอย่างต่อเนื่อง และนำมาประยุกต์ใช้กับงานห้องสมุด  จึงทำให้เกิดรูปแบบของห้องสมุดใหม่ๆ เพิ่มขึ้น และมีชื่อเรียกต่างกัน เช่น ห้องสมุดอิเล็กทรอนิกส์ (Electronic Library) ห้องสมุดดิจิตอล (Digital Library) ห้องสมุดประสม (Hybrid Library) และห้องสมุดเสมือน (Virtual Library)   ผู้ใช้บริการห้องสมุดสามารถค้นหาเอกสารสิ่งพิมพ์ที่ตนต้องการ โดยสามารถเรียกค้นผ่านเครือข่ายที่มีทางด่วนสารสนเทศเป็นตัวเชื่อม ระบบการเรียกค้นข้อมูลนี้ทำให้เกิดความสะดวก ไม่ต้องเสียเวลาเดินทาง และได้รับข้อมูลข่าวสารที่ตรงกับความต้องการในเวลาอันรวดเร็ว 
          ดังนั้นห้องสมุดเสมือนจึงเป็นที่รวมแหล่งสารสนเทศอิเล็กทรอนิกส์ที่มีการจัดการอย่างมีระบบและให้บริการค้นคืนสารสนเทศแบบออนไลน์ในระบบเครือข่าย โดยที่ผู้ใช้สามารถเข้าถึงจากระยะไกลมายังห้องสมุดเพื่อสืบค้นและใช้สารสนเทศของห้องสมุดหรือเชื่อมโยงกับแหล่งสารสนเทศอื่นได้ทุกที่ในระบบเครือข่าย เพื่อให้ผู้ใช้สามารถใช้ได้ทุกเมื่อที่ต้องการอย่างมีประสิทธิภาพและประสิทธิผล
          ทั้งนี้เนื่องจากการจัดการศึกษาต้องมีแหล่งเรียนรู้ที่หลากหลายและรูปแบบของห้องสมุดออนไลน์กำลังจะมีบทบาทและมีความสำคัญอย่างมากสำหรับการศึกษา   การเรียนรู้ในปัจจุบันและอนาคตที่ต้องเน้นให้การศึกษากับทุกคน ทุกหน่วยประชากรสามารถมีส่วนร่วมในการจัดการศึกษา การศึกษาตามอัธยาศัย    การศึกษาตลอดชีวิตอย่างทั่วถึงได้ต้องอาศัยห้องสมุดออนไลน์เสมือนจริงเพื่อเอื้อต่อการเรียนรู้ของคนทุกคนตลอดชีพ
          ในปัจจุบันการวิจัยเกี่ยวกับการใช้บริการห้องสมุดถูกดำเนินการศึกษาอยู่อย่างสม่ำเสมอโดยเจ้าหน้าที่ของห้องสมุดในแต่ละแห่งเองเพื่อประเมินความพึงพอใจ  ปัญหาของการใช้บริการ  และการได้รับบริการด้านต่างๆ  และมีการพัฒนากระบวนการวิจัยและเก็บข้อมูลเป็นระยะๆ  ทั้งการวิจัยเพื่อประเมินผลการให้บริการและการวิจัยเปรียบเทียบกับการให้บริการในรูปแบบอื่นๆ  โดยมุ่งผลของการวิจัยเพื่อพัฒนาการให้บริการแก่นักศึกษาและบุคลากร  รวมทั้งผู้ใช้บริการได้รับความสะดวกจากการรับบริการของห้องสมุดให้มากที่สุด
          โดยพบว่าในแง่ของการแสดงความคิดเห็นต่อการใช้บริการ   การใช้บริการห้องสมุดแบบเผชิญหน้านั้น  ตัวบุคคลจะให้ข้อมูลหรือแสดงความคิดเห็นโดยแสดงออกในทางละมุนละม่อมและอ้อมค้อมมากกว่าการใช้บริการผ่านห้องสมุดเสมือนจริงที่ไม่ได้พบหน้าบรรณารักษ์โดยตรง   อาจเนื่องจากการใช้บริการและการแสดงความคิดเห็นต่างๆ  ผ่านห้องสมุดเสมือนสามารถแสดงได้โดยเสรีไม่ถูกสังเกตจากบุคคลรอบข้าง   การแสดงความคิดเห็นของกลุ่มตัวอย่างผ่านการใช้บริการห้องสมุดเสมือนจึงน่าจะมีความเป็นอิสระของการตอบคำถามและแสดงความคิดเห็นมากกว่า  แต่ในขณะเดียวกันความแตกต่างของความคิดเห็นต่อการใช้บริการและการเรียนรู้ต้องพิจารณาร่วมกับปัจจัยพื้นฐานส่วนบุคคลของผู้ใช้บริการด้วยเช่นกัน   เพราะการใช้บริการห้องสมุดเสมือนจำเป็นต้องใช้ความรู้และความเข้าใจระบบการใช้บริการด้วย   เพราะความแตกต่างของตัวบุคคล  ย่อมมีผลต่อการเลือกใช้ห้องสมุดและย่อมสะท้อนกลับออกมาเป็นความพึงพอใจของการใช้บริการในที่สุด
          ในขณะเดียวกันถึงแม้ว่าในปัจจุบันจะมีการให้บริการห้องมุดเสมือนเพิ่มมากขึ้น  และแม้ห้องสมุดเสมือนจะสามารถให้บริการสืบค้น  จองหนังสือและเอกสารต่างๆ  ได้เช่นเดียวกับการใช้ห้องสมุดปรกติ    หากแต่ห้องสมุดเสมือนยังต้องอาศัยผู้ดูแลคือบรรณารักษ์   ดังนั้นผู้ให้บริการที่ดีย่อมส่งผลต่อการบริการที่ดีของทั้งห้องสมุดปรกติและห้องสมุดแบบเสมือนจริงทั้งคู่การวิจัยต่างๆ เกี่ยวกับห้องสมุดเสมือนจึงควรศึกษาบทบาทของบรรณารักษ์กับการให้บริการของห้องสมุดเสมือนเพื่อเพิ่มข้อมูลและเป็นประโยชน์ต่อการนำผลการวิจัยมาใช้ได้มากยิ่งขึ้น  อีกทั้งจะเป็นประโยชน์ต่อไปกับผู้ใช้ห้องสมุดเสมือนทุกๆ คนในอนาคต
