วัดพระศรีมหาธาตุ เป็นพระอารามหลวงชั

วัดพระศรีมหาธาตุ เป็นพระอารามหลวงชั้นเอก ชนิดวรมหาวิหาร สร้างเมื่อปีพุทธศักราช ๒๔๘๓ ตั้งอยู่ริมถนนพหลโยธิน ตรงหลักกิโลเมตรที่ ๑๘ แขวงอนุสาวรีย์ (เดิมชื่อตำบลกูบแดง) เขตบางเขน กรุงเทพมหานคร จากอดีตถึงปัจจุบันมีเจ้าอาวาส แล้ว ๕ รูป มีประวัติการก่อสร้างโดยสังเขป ดังต่อไปนี้

    เมื่อวันที่ ๑๘ กันยายน ๒๔๘๓ จอมพล ป.พิบูลสงคราม ซึ่งขณะนั้น มียศและบรรดาศักดิ์เป็น พลตรี หลวงพิบูลสงคราม ดำรงตำแหน่งนายกรัฐมนตรี ได้เสนอในที่ประชุมคณะรัฐมนตรีว่า ใคร่จะขออนุมัติเงินสร้างวัดขึ้นสักวัดหนึ่ง เพื่อให้เป็นอนุสรณ์แห่งการปกครองระบอบประชาธิปไตย และใคร่จะให้แล้วเสร็จทันในงานวันชาติวันที่ ๒๔ มิถุนายน ๒๔๘๔ สถานที่จะสร้างนั้น ควรจะสร้างใกล้ ๆ กับอนุสาวรีย์หลักสี่ ทั้งนี้มีเหตุผลว่าชาติกับศาสนาเป็นของคู่กัน เป็นสิ่งที่แยกจากกันไม่ได้ เพราะศาสนาเป็นเครื่องยึดเหนี่ยวและกล่อมเกลาอุปนิสัยและน้ำใจประชาชนให้บำเพ็ญตน และปฏิบัติในสิ่งที่ดีที่ชอบ โดยเฉพาะอย่างยิ่งพระพุทธศาสนาเป็นศาสนาประเสริฐสุด อันมวลประชาราษฎรชาวไทยและชาติอื่น ๆ อีกหลายประเทศยึดถืออยู่ เป็นศาสนาที่ทันสมัยอยู่เสมอ และยิ่งเป็นประเทศไทย เป็นประเทศประชาธิปไตยด้วยแล้ว พระพุทธศาสนาจึงเป็นศาสนาที่เหมาะสมยิ่งด้วยประการทั้งปวง เพราะเป็นหลักของการปกครองระบอบประชาธิปไตย อีกประการหนึ่ง การเปลี่ยนแปลงการปกครองก็ดี งานสร้างชาติซึ่งกระทำภายหลังการเปลี่ยนแปลงการปกครองก็ดี ที่สามารถฟันฝ่าอุปสรรคและประสบความสำเร็จเป็นอย่างดีมาแล้วก็โดยอาศัยพุทธานุภาพคุ้มครองป้องกันประเทศชาติราษฎร และอำนวยความสถาพรสำเร็จประโยชน์อย่างดีที่สุดที่จะเป็นได้ จึงสมควรที่จะสร้างวัดขึ้นสักวัดหนึ่ง เพื่อให้เป็นที่เชิดชูพระบวรพุทธศาสนาคู่กันไปกับเกียรติศักดิ์ของประเทศชาติ คณะรัฐมนตรีได้พิจารณาแล้ว ลงมติเห็นชอบด้วยเป็นเอกฉันท์ให้สร้างวัดขึ้นวัดหนึ่งในที่ใกล้อนุสาวรีย์หลักสี่ และให้ชื่อว่า
