การปนเปื้อนสารหนูในแหล่งน้ำ เป็นข่าวที่พบเห็นได้อย่างต่อเนื่องทั้งในประเทศและต่างประเทศ การปนเปื้อนนั้นเกิดได้ทั้งจากธรรมชาติ และจากการกระทำของมนุษย์เอง เมื่อมนุษย์ได้รับสารหนูปริมาณมากจะก่อให้เกิดอาการเฉียบพลัน เช่น ท้องเสีย อาเจียน มึนเมา ตาพร่ามัว เป็นต้น แต่หากได้รับปริมาณน้อยและมีระยะเวลานานจะก่อให้เกิดอาการพิษเรื้อรัง เช่นเกิดอาการที่ผิวหนัง เกิดโรคมะเร็ง และเสียชีวิต ทั้งนี้ การศึกษาค้นคว้า และวิจัยเกี่ยวกับการปนเปื้อนสารหนู ได้รับความสนใจมากขึ้นทั้งในประเด็นของการศึกษาผลกระทบที่เกิดขึ้นต่อสุขภาพอนามัย การแก้ไขปัญหาการปนเปื้อน และการพัฒนาวิธีการตรวจวิเคราะห์ อย่างไรก็ตาม การกำหนดมาตรการป้องกันและแก้ไขอย่างจริงจังควรได้รับความร่วมมือจากทุกฝ่าย
