วัดโพธิ์ เป็นพระอารามหลวงและเป็นวัดประจำรัชกาลที่ 1 แห่งราชวงศ์จักรี เดิมชื่อ วัดโพธาราม เป็นวัดเก่าแก่ตั้งแต่สมัยกรุงศรีอยุธยา ตั้งอยู่ทางทิศใต้ของพระบรมมหาราชวัง หลังจากที่พระบาทสมเด็จพระพุทธยอดฟ้าจุฬาโลกมหาราชทรงสถาปนาพระบรมมหาราชวังแล้ว จึงทรงพระกรุณาโปรดเกล้าฯ ให้บูรณะปฏิสังขรณ์วัดโพธาราม เมื่อปี พ.ศ.2331 และในปี พ.ศ.2344 ทรงพระราชทานนามใหม่ว่า “วัดพระเชตุพนวิมลมังคลาวาศ” ซึ่งต่อมาราชกาลที่ 4 ได้โปรดฯ ให้เปลี่ยนนามวัดเป็น “วัดพระเชตุพนวิมลมังคลาราม”
