เรื่องราวความรักของ "แม่นาคพระโขนง" ถูกนำมาสร้างเป็นละครโทรทัศน์ หรือภาพยนตร์ หลายต่อหลายครั้ง นับตั้งแต่ปี พ.ศ. 2470 ที่นำมาสร้างเป็นภาพยนตร์ โดย หม่อมราชวงศ์อนุศักดิ์ หัสดินทร์ แต่พอสร้างแล้วฉายจนฟิล์มเปื่อย และหายสาปสูญไปอยางน่าเสียดาย จึงไม่ปรากฏชื่อและข้อมูลของนักแสดงนำของภาพยนตร์ในเวอร์ชั่นนี้

ต่อมามีการสร้าง "นางนาคพระโขนง" อีก 2 เวอร์ชั่น ในรูปแบบภาพยนตร์ คือในปี พ.ศ. 2495 และปี พ.ศ. 2498 แต่ก็ไม่ปรากฏข้อมูลนักแสดงนำเช่นกัน

กระทั่งปี พ.ศ.2502 บท "แม่นาคพระโขนง" ถูกถ่ายทอดอีกครั้ง โดย "ปรียา รุ่งเรือง" สาวฮอทในสมัยนั้น ซึ่งภายหลังได้กลายเป็นนางเอกที่รับบท "แม่นาค" มากที่สุด ถึง 4 ครั้ง ทั้งในปี 2502, 2505, 2511 และ 2521 เว้นไปเพียงปีเดียว "วิไลวรรณ วัฒนพาณิช" ก็มาสวมบทแม่นาคคนต่อไป ในชื่อเรื่อง "แม่นาคคืนชีพ"
