การรวมตัวของอาเซียนที่มีสมาชิก 10 ประเทศ ทาให้มีประชากรรวมกันเกือบ 10% ของประชากรโลก แต่ GDP มีสัดส่วนรวมกันเพียง 3% ของ GDP โลกเท่านั้น นับเป็นความท้าทายของประเทศสมาชิกที่จะต่อยอดความร่วมมือด้วยกัน เพื่อเสริมสร้างความแข็งแกร่ง เพิ่มอานาจการต่อรอง และเพิ่มขีดความสามารถในการแข่งขันในเวทีโลก ดีกว่าต่างคนต่างเดินแบบหัวเดียวกระเทียมลีบ ท่ามกลางกระแสโลกาภิวัฒน์ที่พบเห็นการรวมตัวในหลากรูปแบบกระจายอยู่ทั่วทุกมุมโลก ทั้งเพื่อประโยชน์ทางเศรษฐกิจและเพื่อวัตถุประสงค์อื่น ประกอบกับมีแนวคิดเกี่ยวกับการเคลื่อนย้ายศูนย์กลางของเศรษฐกิจโลกจากโลกตะวันตกมายังโลกตะวันออก โดยมีญี่ปุ่น จีน เกาหลี และอินเดียเป็นหัวหอกสาคัญ ซึ่งอาเซียนก็ตั้งอยู่ท่ามกลางพลวัตที่กล่าว และประเทศที่ได้รับการกล่าวถึงต่างก็เป็นพันธมิตรของทั้งไทยและอาเซียนในกรอบ ASEAN+3 (จีน เกาหลีใต้ ญี่ปุ่น) หรือ ASEAN+6 (เพิ่มออสเตรเลีย นิวซีแลนด์ อินเดีย) ด้วย

อย่างไรก็ตาม หากมองลึกลงมาในมิติระดับประเทศและวิเคราะห์ศักยภาพของไทยเปรียบเทียบกับชาติสมาชิกอาเซียนจะพบว่า ความสามารถในการแข่งขันของไทยเทียบกับชาติอาเซียนอื่นแล้วจัดอยู่ในระดับกลาง และมีทิศทางลดลงต่อเนื่อง

ทั้งนี้ จากการจัดอันดับความสามารถในการแข่งขันโดย World Economic Forum ใน The Global Competitiveness Report ซึ่งเริ่มตั้งแต่ปี 2550 เป็นต้นมาจนถึงฉบับล่าสุดปี 2555-2556 โดยเลือกสารวจข้อมูล 144 ประเทศและมีชาติอาเซียนรวมอยู่ด้วยถึง 8 ประเทศ (ไม่รวมลาวและพม่า) จะเห็นว่าแม้ไทยจะยังรั้งอยู่ในลาดับที่ 4 ของชาติอาเซียน แต่คะแนนความสามารถในการแข่งขันของไทยมีแนวโน้มลดลงมาโดยตลอด โดยในปีล่าสุดก็ทรงตัวในระดับเดิม ในขณะที่ระยะ 3 ปีล่าสุด สิงคโปร์ บรูไน ฟิลิปปินส์ และกัมพูชา มีพัฒนาการดีขึ้นอย่างต่อเนื่องทั้งด้านคะแนนและอันดับ และนั่นอาจหมายถึง สถานะโดยรวมของไทยในการแข่งขันในเวทีโลก หรือแม้กระทั่งในเวทีอาเซียนด้วยกันกาลังถดถอยลง ดังนั้น ไทยควรจะต้องใช้โอกาสของ AEC ในเชิงรุก เพื่อเพิ่มความสามารถในการแข่งขันขึ้นมา มิเช่นนั้นอาจถดถอยไปมากกว่าเดิม
