อาเซียน หรือ สมาคมประชาชาติแห่งเอเชียตะวันออกเฉียงใต้ (Association of South East AsianNations หรือ ASEAN) ก่อตั้งขึ้นโดยปฏิญญากรุงเทพ (Bangkok Declaration) ซึ่งรัฐมนตรีว่าการกระทรวงการต่างประเทศของ 5 ประเทศสมาชิก อันได้แก่ อินโดนีเซีย ฟิลิปปินส์ มาเลเซีย สิงคโปร์ และไทย ได้มีการลงนามร่วมกัน ที่วังสราญรมย์ จ.กรุงเทพฯ เมื่อวันที่ 8 สิงหาคม พ.ศ. 2510 โดยมีจุดมุ่งหมาย คือ เพื่อให้ความร่วมมือกันทางเศรษฐกิจ สังคม และวัฒนธรรม เพื่อยกระดับการครองชีพและฐานะทางเศรษฐกิจ และความเจริญในทางเทคนิค วิชาการร่วมกันระหว่างประเทศสมาชิก

ซึ่งในเวลาต่อมาได้มีประเทศต่าง ๆ เข้ามาเป็นสมาชิกเพิ่มเติม ได้แก่ บรูไนดารุสซาลาม เวียดนาม ลาว พม่า และกัมพูชา ทำให้ปัจจุบันมีสมาชิกอาเซียนทั้งหมด 10 ประเทศซึ่งในเวลาต่อมาได้มีประเทศต่าง ๆ เข้ามาเป็นสมาชิกเพิ่มเติม ได้แก่ บรูไนดารุสซาลาม เวียดนาม ลาว พม่า และกัมพูชา ทำให้ปัจจุบันมีสมาชิกอาเซียนทั้งหมด 10 ประเทศ

ทั้งนี้ ได้มีการกำหนดให้ วันที่ 8 สิงหาคม ซึ่งเป็นวันครบรอบวันก่อตั้งสมาคมอาเซียน ถือเป็นวันสำคัญในการจัดกิจกรรมสำคัญต่าง ๆ ในแต่ละประเทศสมาชิก และในปัจจุบันได้มีการเรียกชื่อวันก่อตั้งสมาคมอาเซียนเพียงย่อ ๆ ว่า วันอาเซียน เพื่อให้สะดวกต่อการจดจำนั่นเอง
