ความนิยมและความสำคัญของเรื่องมหาชาติชาดก ปรากฏให้เห็นได้จากวรรณกรรมที่แต่งขึ้นมากมาย ทั้งต่างสำนวนและต่างยุคสมัย เฉพาะที่เป็นฉบับหลวงก็มีมากมายในลักษณะของรูปแบบคำประพันธ์ต่างๆ นอกจากนี้ยังมีมหาชาติฉบับท้องถิ่นต่างๆ อีก เช่น ทางภาคเหนือมีมหาชาติภาคพายัพเขียนเป็นภาษาล้านนามีหลายฉบับและหลาย สำนวน ทางภาคอีสานมีมหาชาติคำเฉียง ส่วนทางภาคใต้มีมหาชาติชาดกฉบับวัดมัชฌิมาวาสสงขลาเป็นต้น และยังมีมหาชาติสำนวนต่างๆ อีกมากมายที่แต่งกันเองโดยอิสระกระจายอยู่ตามหัวเมืองต่างๆ ประเพณีการฟังเทศน์มหาชาติจึงปรากฏในสังคมไทยทุกภูมิภาคทั้งในราชสำนัก และในหมู่ประชาชนทั่วไป
