แมลงทับพบในเขตร้อนและเขตอบอุ่นทั่วโลก ปัจจุบันพบแล้วกว่า 15,000 ชนิด ใน 450 สกุล และที่สูญพันธุ์ไปแล้วเป็นซากดึกดำบรรพ์กว่า 100 ชนิด บางชนิดมีความยาวถึง 77 มิลลิเมตร[2]

แมลงทับนับเป็นแมลงปีกแข็งที่บินได้เร็วและสูงมาก และเมื่อถูกรบกวนจะมีพฤติกรรมแกล้งตาย โดยจะอยู่เฉย ๆ หรือหล่นจากต้นไม้ที่เกาะอยู่เพื่อลวงศัตรูให้เข้าใจผิดว่าตายแล้ว

สำหรับแมลงทับชนิดที่พบในประเทศไทย มีอยู่ 2 ชนิดที่พบได้บ่อยที่สุด คือ แมลงทับกลมขาเขียว (Sternocera aequisignata) พบมากในภาคกลาง และแมลงทับกลมขาแดง (S . ruficornis) พบมากในภาคอีสาน ซึ่งทั้ง 2 ชนิดนี้กินใบอ่อนของมะขามเทศเป็นอาหาร และมีสีเขียวเหลือบทองเป็นมันแวววาวทั้งคู่ ซึ่งปัจจุบันนี้ได้มีความพยายามของทางการที่จะอนุรักษ์สายพันธุ์ของแมลงทับมิให้สูญพันธุ์ และมีการนำเอาปีกแมลงทับทั้ง 2 ชนิดนี้ทำเป็นงานหัตถกรรมชนิดต่าง ๆ ในโครงการพระราชดำริ ศูนย์ส่งเสริมศิลปาชีพพิเศษ บางไทร จังหวัดพระนครศรีอยุธยา ของสมเด็จพระนางเจ้าสิริกิติ์ พระบรมราชินีนาถ[3]
