คำว่า  "เซียมซี"  นั้นเป็นภาษาจีน  เซียม แปลว่า แผ่นกระดาษ แผ่นเล็กๆ ยาวๆ  หรือจะแปลให้เข้าใจง่ายขึ้น คือกระดาษโน้ต ส่วนคำว่า  ซี แปลว่า บทกลอน  เมื่อนำมารวมกันจึงแปลว่า บทกลอนบนแผ่นกระดาษแผ่นเล็กๆเพื่อให้จดจำได้ง่าย
