พระราชวังจันทน์ ตั้งอยู่ติดกับ ค่ายสมเด็จพระนเรศวรมหาราช กองทัพภาคที่ 3 ถนนวังจันทน์ ตำบลในเมือง อำเภอเมือง จังหวัดพิษณุโลก เป็นที่ตั้งศาลสมเด็จพระนเรศวรมหาราช ในอดีตยังเคยเป็นที่ตั้งของโรงเรียนพิษณุโลกพิทยาคม ปัจจุบัน กรมศิลปากร ได้เข้ามาทำการบูรณะค้นหาแนวเขตพระราชวังจันทน์ ระยะที่ 1 เสร็จสิ้นเป็นที่เรียบร้อยแล้ว

พระมหาธรรมราชาที่ 1 (ลิไท) เป็นพระราชโอรสใน พระยาเลอไท พระมหากษัตริย์องค์ที่ 4 แห่งราชวงศ์พระร่วง ของอาณาจักรสุโขทัย ทรงครองกรุงสุโขทัยระหว่าง พ.ศ. 1890 - พ.ศ. 1904 ทรงขึ้นครองสิริราชสมบัติ เป็นพระมหากษัตริย์ พระองค์ที่ 6 ของราชวงศ์พระร่วง พระมหาธรรมราชาที่ 1 เสด็จครองราชสมบัติ กรุงสุโขทัย ณ เมืองพิษณุโลก และทรงครองเมืองพิษณุโลกระหว่าง พ.ศ. 1905 - พ.ศ. 1912 เป็นเวลา 7 ปี พระองค์ทรงสร้างพระราชวังจันทร์บนเนินดินบนฝั่งตะวันตกของแม่น้ำน่าน และสันนิษฐานว่าเคยเป็นที่ประทับของพระมหากษัตริย์ไทยมาตั้งแต่สมัยสุโขทัย จนถึงอยุธยา

เมื่อสมเด็จพระบรมไตรโลกนาถ กษัตริย์แห่งกรุงศรีอยุธยาทรงย้ายราชธานีมาอยู่ที่เมืองพิษณุโลกใน พ.ศ. 2006 ทรงใช้พระราชวังจันทร์เป็นที่ประทับตลอด เชื่อว่ามีการก่อสร้างเพิ่มเติมในสมัยพระองค์ด้วย จากนั้นพระราชวังจันทน์ก็มักจะเป็นที่ประทับของพระมหาอุปราชของกรุงศรีอยุธยาในสมัยต่อๆมาจนถึงสมัยของสมเด็จพระมหาธรรมราชาธิราชทรงให้สมเด็จพระนเรศวรเสด็จไปประทับอยู่ ณ ที่นั่น จากนั้นก็ไม่ปรากฏว่ามีเชื้อพระวงศ์พระองค์ใดไปอยู่ที่พระราชวังจันทน์อีก

การค้นพบ[แก้]
ภายหลังพระราชวังจันทน์ได้ร้างลงและไม่มีใครสนใจอีก จนกระทั่งปรากฏหลักฐานในจดหมายเหตุระยะทางไปพิษณุโลกของสมเด็จพระเจ้าบรมวงศ์เธอ เจ้าฟ้าจิตรเจริญ กรมพระยานริศรานุวัดติวงศ์ เสด็จตรวจราชการเมืองพิษณุโลก ใน พ.ศ. 2444 โปรดให้ขุนศรเทพบาล สำรวจรังวัดจัดทำผังพระราชวังจันทน์

ต่อมาพระบาทสมเด็จพระจุลจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว เสด็จสังเวยเทพารักษ์ วันที่ 17 ตุลาคม พ.ศ. 2444 มีพระราชหัตถเลขาไว้ว่า มีซากพระราชวังก่อด้วยอิฐ สูงพ้นดิน 2-3 ศอกเศษ มีพระที่นั่งคล้ายพระที่นั่งจันทรพิศาล ในพระราชวังนารายณ์ราชนิเวศน์ จังหวัดลพบุรี มีกำแพงวัง 2 ชั้น มีสระสองพี่น้องอยู่นอกกำแพงวัง ภายหลังปรักหักพังเป็นป่ารกในสงครามอะแซหวุ่นกี้ตีเมืองพิษณุโลก

การขึ้นทะเบียนเป็นโบราณสถาน[แก้]
ใน พ.ศ. 2475 โรงเรียนพิษณุโลกพิทยาคม ได้ย้ายมาจากบริเวณ วัดนางพญา มาตั้งในพื้นที่พระราชวังจันทน์ จึงมีการปรับพื้นที่ก่อสร้างอาคารสถานที่ต่างๆ มาเป็นลำดับ

ใน พ.ศ. 2535 โรงเรียนจะก่อสร้างอาคารเรียน 4 ชั้นที่บริเวณสนามบาสเกตบอลใกล้ต้นโพธิ์ใหญ่ ขณะที่คนงานก่อสร้างขุดหลุมเสาฐานรากได้พบซากอิฐเก่า กรมศิลปากรจึงได้ขึ้นทะเบียนเป็นโบราณสถาน เมื่อวันที่ 26 พฤศจิกายน พ.ศ. 2536 มีพื้นที่ 128 ไร่ 2 งาน 50 ตารางวา ตามหนังสือ ที่ ศธ 07/4954 เพื่อให้กรมศิลปากรเข้ามาบูรณะพระราชวังจันทน์เป็นอนุสรณ์สถานทางประวัติศาสตร์ โรงเรียนจึงต้องจัดหาสถานที่แห่งใหม่ เพื่อเตรียมการย้ายโรงเรียนเป็นครั้งที่ 3 ออกไปยังสถานที่แห่งใหม่ต่อไป

การย้ายโรงเรียนพิษณุโลกพิทยาคม[แก้]
พ.ศ. 2548 โรงเรียนพิษณุโลกพิทยาคม ทั้งหมดได้ย้ายออกจากเขตพระราชวังจันทน์ไปบริเวณบึงแก่งใหญ่จนแล้วเสร็จ เริ่มรื้อถอนอาคารเรียนในเขตพระราชวังจันทน์ออกทั้งหมด และปรับปรุงภูมิทัศน์ เพื่อดำเนินการบูรณะพระราชวังจันทน์ต่อไป
