MERS-CoV หรือ Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus เป็นเชื้อไวรัสของระบบทางเดินหายใจในกลุ่ม coronavirus เช่นเดียวกับไวรัส SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome) ที่เคยแพร่ระบาดอย่างหนักมาก่อนในแถบเอเชียเมื่อปีพ.ศ. 2546
โดย MERS-CoV ถูกค้นพบครั้งแรกเมื่อเดือนเมษายน ปี 2555 ในประเทศแถบตะวันออกกลาง ซึ่งทำให้ผู้ที่ติดเชื้อไวรัสชนิดนี้ถึงขั้นเสียชีวิต จึงถูกจัดเป็นโรคอุบัติใหม่ เนื่องจากเป็นเชื้อไวรัสสายพันธุ์ใหม่ที่ยังไม่เคยพบเห็นในคนมาก่อน และเรียกว่า “โรคติดเชื้อไวรัสโคโรนาสายพันธุ์ใหม่ 2012”
อาการที่ต้องสงสัยของผู้ที่ติดเชื้อ คือจะมีอาการไข้สูงคล้ายไข้หวัดใหญ่ ไอ จาม น้ำมูกไหล อาเจียน บางรายอาจมีอาการถ่ายเหลว จนถึงขั้นไตวาย หรือบางรายอาจมีอาการหายใจหอบ เจ็บหน้าอก ปอดบวมรุนแรงจนถึงขั้นเสียชีวิต ซึ่งโรคนี้มีอัตราการตายร้อยละ 30-40 โดย เชื้อจะอยู่ในละอองน้ำมูก-น้ำลายของผู้ป่วย และติดต่อกันได้ง่ายจากการไอหรือจาม
เชื้อ MERS-CoV มีระยะฟักตัวตั้งแต่ 2- 14 วัน ดังนั้นหากผู้ป่วยเริ่มมีอาการไข้ ไอ หายใจเร็ว มีอาการหอบ และภายใน 14 วันนั้นมีประวัติว่าผู้ป่วยเดินทางไปยังต่างประเทศ โดยเฉพาะประเทศที่มีการแพร่กระจายของเชื้อหรือพื้นที่เสี่ยง อย่างเช่นในตอนนี้คือ เกาหลีใต้ (รายงานผู้เสียชีวิตจากไวรัส MERS ในเกาหลีใต้ล่าสุด พบเสียวิตแล้ว 5 ราย) หรือสัมผัสใกล้ชิดกับผู้ป่วยที่มีอาการติดเชื้อในระบบหายใจที่รุนแรง แต่ไม่สามารถหาเชื้อที่เป็นสาเหตุได้ ควรเข้ารับการตรวจหาเชื้อ MERS-CoV โดยเร็ว
อย่างที่กล่าวในข้างต้น โรคนี้ไม่มียาหรือวัคซีนโดยตรงในการรักษา การรักษาจึงต้องรักษาไปตามอาการ ที่สำคัญหากพบอาการใกล้เคียงกับอาการของโรคก็ให้รีบมาพบแพทย์โดยด่วน และวิธีป้องกันเบื้องต้นที่ทำได้ง่ายๆ ก็คือ ยึดหลักกินร้อน ช้อนกลาง ล้างมือสะอาด ป่วยไข้สวมหน้ากากอนามัย เนื่องจากการป้องกันที่ดีที่สุดก็คือ การรักษาสุขอานามัยตามแนวทางการแลสุขอนามัยที่ดีนั่นเอง
