ระบบการบริหารการศึกษาของประเทศมาเลเซียอยู่ในความรับผิดชอบของกระทรวงศึกษาธิการ แบ่งระดับการบริหารเป็น 5 ระดับ คือ ระดับชาติ ระดับรัฐ ระดับอำเภอ ระดับกลุ่มโรงเรียนและระดับโรงเรียน การบริหารการศึกษาระดับชาติอยู่ในความรับผิดชอบของรัฐบาลกลาง ( Federal Government) การศึกษาทุกประเภททุกระดับอยู่ภายใต้ความรับผิดชอบของกระทรวงศึกษาธิการเพียงกระทรวงเดียว ยกเว้นการศึกษาที่มีลักษณะเป็นการศึกษานอกระบบ (Non-formal Education) จะมีกรมจากกระทรวงอื่น ๆ ที่เกี่ยวข้องรับผิดชอบ เช่น กรมแรงงาน กรมเกษตร เป็นต้น

ระบบการจัดการศึกษาของมาเลเซีย (National Education System) เป็นระบบ 6:3:2 คือ
- ระดับประถมศึกษา หลักสูตร 6 ปีการศึกษา
- ระดับมัธยมศึกษาตอนต้น หลักสูตร 3 ปีการศึกษา
- ระดับมัธยมศึกษาตอนปลาย หลักสูตร 2 ปีการศึกษา
- ระดับเตรียมอุดมศึกษา หลักสูตร 1 หรือ 2 ปีการศึกษา
- ระดับอุดมศึกษา หลักสูตรเฉลี่ยประมาณ 3 ปีครึ่งถึง 4 ปีการศึกษา
และแบ่งการศึกษาออกเป็น 5 ระดับดังนี้
1. การศึกษาระดับประถมศึกษา (Pre-school Education)
2. การศึกษาระดับประถมศึกษา (Primary Education)
3. การศึกษาระดับมัธยมศึกษา (Secondary Education)
4. การศึกษาระดับหลังมัธยมศึกษาหรือเตรียมอุดมศึกษา (Post-secondary Education)
5. การศึกษาระดับอุดมศึกษา (Higher Education)
ส่วนสถานศึกษาที่ทำหน้าที่จัดการศึกษาระดับต่าง ๆ นั้น แบ่งออกเป็น 3 ประเภท คือ
1. สถานศึกษาของรัฐบาล (Government Education Institutions)
2. สถานศึกษาในอุปถัมภ์ของรัฐบาล (Government-aided Educational Institutions)
3. สถานศึกษาเอกชน (Private Educational Institutes)
ในโรงเรียนของรัฐบาลกำหนดให้ใช้ภาษาประจำชาติคือ ภาษามลายู (Bahasa Malayu) ที่เขียนด้วยอักษรรูมี (อักษรภาษาอังกฤษ) เป็นภาษาหลักในการจัดกิจกรรมการเรียนการสอน
