พลังงานทดแทน โดยทั่วไปหมายถึงพลังงานที่ใช้ทดแทนพลังงานจากฟอสซิล เช่น ถ่านหิน, ปิโตรเลียม และ แก๊สธรรมชาติซึ่งเป็นสาเหตุโลกร้อน ตัวอย่างพลังงานทดแทนที่สำคัญเช่น พลังงานลม, พลังงานน้ำ, พลังงานแสงอาทิตย์, พลังงานน้ำขึ้นน้ำลง, พลังงานคลื่น, พลังงานความร้อนใต้พิภพ, เชื้อเพลิงชีวภาพ เป็นต้น ในปี 2555 ประเทศไทยใช้พลังงานทดแทนเพียง 18.2% ของพลังงานทั้งหมด
พลังงานทดแทนอีกประเภทหนึ่งเป็นพลังงานที่ถูกทำขึ้นใหม่(renewable)ได้อย่างต่อเนื่อง เรียกว่า พลังงานหมุนเวียน ได้แก่ แสงอาทิตย์ ลม น้ำ และไฮโดรเจน เป็นต้น
