ดอยอ่างขาง เป็นส่วนหนึ่งของเทือกเขาแดนลาว สูงประมาณ 1,900 ม. จากระดับน้ำทะเล ภูมิประเทศเป็นเขาหินปูนและหินดินดาน อยู่ติดกับพรมแดนพม่า จึงมีหมู่บ้านชาวเขาเผ่าต่างๆ กระจายอยู่ทั่วไป มีอากาศหนาวเย็นยาวนานเกือบตลอดปีและมีอุณหภูมิต่ำมากในฤดูหนาว จึงเหมาะสมในการจัดตั้งเป็นสถานีวิจัยพืชเมืองหนาวแห่งแรกของโครงการหลวง โดยเป็นสถานีหลักในการศึกษาวิจัยผลไม้ที่สำคัญที่สุดของประเทศ นักท่องเที่ยวนิยมมาดูขั้นตอนการปลูกการดูแล และการผลิตพืชผักเมืองหนาว ที่เรียกว่า การท่องเที่ยวเชิงเกษตรกรรม
