จากการประชุมที่จัดโดยรัฐบาลประเทศสวิตเซอร์แลนด์และประเทศต่าง ๆ ในยุโรปอีก12 ประเทศในเดือนสิงหาคม พ.ศ. 2507ข้อตกลงที่ประชุมได้รับการร่างและลงนามโดยประเทศต่าง ๆ ที่เข้าร่วมประชุมในครั้งนั้น ซึ่งเราเรียกข้อตกลงนี้ว่า อนุสัญญาเจนีวา เป็นอนุสัญญาฉบับแรก ซึ่งมีสาระสำคัญว่าด้วยการสงเคราะห์ผู้บาดเจ็บจากสนามรบ ซึ่งอนุสัญญานี้ได้รับการแก้ไขปรับปรุงจากการประชุมระหว่างประเทศในเวลาต่อมา การแก้ไขปรับปรุงครั้ง ล่าสุด คือการประชุมในปี พ.ศ. 2492 และได้ตกลงประกาศเป็นอนุสัญญาเจนีวาจำนวน 4 ฉบับ ได้ลงนามกันในปี พ.ศ. 2492 โดยมีหลักการมูลฐานสำคัญ 3 ประการ คือ มนุษยธรรม ความเสมอภาค และ ความไม่ลำเอียง และอนุสัญญาทั้ง 4 ฉบับมีสาระสำคัญโดยสังเขปดังนี้

อนุสัญญาฉบับที่ 1 ว่าด้วยการปรับปรุงสภาพความเป็นอยู่ของผู้บาดเจ็บ ผู้ป่วยในกองทัพที่อยู่ในสนามรบให้มี สภาพดีขึ้น
อนุสัญญาฉบับที่ 2 ว่าด้วยการปรับปรุงสภาพความเป็นอยู่ของผู้บาดเจ็บ ผู้ป่วยและลูกเรือที่อับปางของกอง กำลังรบในทะเล ให้มีสภาพดีขึ้น
อนุสัญญาฉบับที่ 3 ว่าด้วยการปฏิบัติต่อเชลยศึก
อนุสัญญาฉบับที่ 4 ว่าด้วยการปกป้องคุ้มครองบุคคลพลเรือนในระหว่างสงคราม หรือการขัดแย้งทางกำลังทหารประเทศต่าง ๆ ให้สัตยาบันต่ออนุสัญญานี้ ดังนี้
