Abstract
Synchronized oestrous was induced in indigenous, Damascus goats outside the breeding season using intravaginal,, Progestagen sponges containing 60 mg of medroxyprogesterone acetate (MAP), plus pregnant mare serum gonadotrophin (PMSG).
. A total of 78 female Damascus goats of mixed ages (1.5 to 5 years) were divided randomly into two, equal groups T
and C.The females in Group T were treated with MAP for 18 days and injected intramuscularly with either 150 or 200 IU
PMSG at. Sponge, withdrawal whereas animals in, Group C (control) received no treatment. The results indicate that oestrous
was induced. Between 21 to 68 h post-sponge withdrawal in all treated animals resulting in, oestrous response of 100%. All
.Animals in Group C were in anoestrous during the treatment period. In Group T conception rate, and fecundity was 65.8% and
195.2%,, Respectively. There was no signi apertium cant difference in pregnancy duration between animals carrying singles and twins
(149 versus, 148.5 days. Respectively). The average birth weight of kids was 3.8 kg. However single-born kids, were
signi apertium cantly (P < 0.05) heavier at birth than individual twins (4.8 versus 3.8 kg). The results suggest that it is possible to
induce synchronized. And fertile oestrous obtain successful, pregnancy and kidding in Damascus goats outside the breeding
season using intravaginal,, Sponges and PMSG. # 1999 Published by Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
