ประวัติที่มา ระบำเชียงแสน เป็นระบำชุดที่ ๔ ประดิษฐ์ขึ้นตามแบบศิลปะ และโบราณวัตถุสถานเชียงแสน นักโบราณคดีกำหนดสมัยเชียงแสน อยู่ในระหว่างพุทธศตวรรษที่ ๑๗ – ๒๕ ซึ่งได้เผยแพร่ไปทั่วดินแดนภาคเหนือของประเทศไทย ในสมัยโบราณเรียกว่าอาณาจักรลานนา ต่อมามีนครเชียงใหม่เป็นนครหลวงของอาณาจักร และเป็นศูนย์กลางแห่งการศึกษาพระพุทธศาสนาฝ่ายหินยานอันเจริญรุ่งเรือง จนถึงมีพระเถระไทยผู้เป็นนักปราชญ์สามารถแต่งตำนาน และคัมภีร์พระพุทธศาสนาเป็นภาษาบาลีขึ้นไว้หลายคัมภีร์ อาทิ คัมภีร์ชินกาลมาลีปกรณ์ และมังคลัตถทีปนี เป็นต้น ศิลปะแบบเชียงแสนได้แพร่หลายลงมาตามลุ่มแม่น้ำโขงเข้าไปในพระราชอาณาจักรลาว สมัยที่เรียกว่าลานช้าง หรือกรุงศรีสัตนาคนหุต แล้วแพร่หลายเข้าในประเทศไทยทางภาคตะวันออกเฉียงเหนือตอนบนด้วย เช่น พระพุทธรูปบางชนิดที่นักโบราณคดีบางท่าน บัญญัติเรียกว่า พระพุทธรูปเชียงแสนแบบลาว หรือพระลาวพุงขาว ด้วยเหตุนี้ระบำเชียงแสนจึงมีลีลาท่ารำ และกระบวนเพลงแบบสำเนียงไทยภาคเหนือ ลาว และแบบไทยภาตะวันออกเฉียงเหนือปนอยู่ด้วย
       ระบำเชียงแสน จัดแสดงครั้งแรก เมื่อวันที่ ๒๔ พฤษภาคม พ.ศ.๒๕๑๐ และภายหลังได้นำออกแสดงในโรงละครแห่งชาติ และที่อื่น ๆ เพื่อให้ประชาชนชม
