ความเป็นมาของโรงเรียนพิษณุโลกพิทยาคม
โรงเรียน มีชื่อว่า “โรงเรียนตัวอย่างประจำมณฑลพิษณุโลก”และสร้างตัวโรงเรียนขึ้นใหม่ บริเวณทางใต้ของศาลาโรงโขนวัดพระศรีรัตนมหาธาตุ เขตติดต่อวัดนางพญา (มีพื้นที่ประมาณ 1 ไร่ 3 งาน 80 ตารางวา) โดยมีพระครูโลกเชษฐ์ชินราชบริบาลเป็น “ครูใหญ่คนแรก” จึงนับได้ว่าโรงเรียนมีกำเนิดตั้งแต่ปี พ.ศ. 2442

ปี พ.ศ. 2473-2474 ทางราชการได้สร้างสะพานนเรศวรข้ามแม่น้ำน่าน บริเวณใต้วัดพระศรีรัตนมหาธาตุเป็นเหตุให้ต้องย้ายโรงเรียนไปยังที่ตั้งทางทิศตะวันออกซึ่งเป็นวัดที่ของวัดราชคฤห์ ซึ่งเป็นวัดร้าง (ปัจจุบันเป็นบริเวณโรงเรียนจ่าการบุญ และยังต้องยืมศาลาโรงโขนเรียนด้วยเป็นเวลากว่า 33 ปี)ในกลางปีต่อมาทางราชการได้สั่งย้ายโรงเรียนฝึกหัดครูมูลพิษณุวิทยายนไปอยู่บริเวณสระแก้ว (บริเวณโรงพยาบาลพุทธชินราช) จึงยกอาคารสถานที่ในบริเวณ วังจันทน์ให้เป็นสมบัติของโรงเรียนพิษณุโลกพิทยาคมทั้งหมด โรงเรียนพิษณุโลกพิทยาคมจึงย้ายครั้งที่ 2 มาตั้งอยู่ ณ พระราชวังจันทน์ ระยะหลังเปลี่ยนแปลงการปกครอง เมื่อวันที่ 24 มิถุนายน พ.ศ. 2475 ทางราชการยกเลิกมณฑล”เป็นเปลี่ยน "จังหวัด" ชื่อโรงเรียนจึงเปลี่ยนเป็น "โรงเรียนประจำจังหวัดพิษณุโลก" ต่อมากระทรวงศึกษาธิการตั้งชื่อเฉพาะขึ้นใหม่เป็น “โรงเรียนพิษณุโลกพิทยาคม” มาจนกระทั่งปัจจุบัน

โรงเรียนพิษณุโลกพิทยาคมเคยเป็นโรงเรียนพี่เลี้ยงก่อตั้งโรงเรียนคือ ในปี พ.ศ. 2507 โรงเรียนจ่านกร้อง ต่อมากรมศิลปากรได้ขึ้นทะเบียนวังจันทร์เป็นโบราณสถานแห่งชาติ ทำให้โรงเรียนต้องย้ายสถานที่ทำการสอนไปยังที่ของกระทรวงเกษตร เพื่อให้กรมศิลปากรเข้ามาบูรณะ

ประมาณกลางปี 2475 ทางราชการได้สั่งย้ายโรงเรียนฝึกหัดครูมูล “พิษณุวิทยายน” ไปอยู่บริเวณ “สระแก้ว” (บริเวณโรงพยาบาลพุทธชินราช) จึงยกอาคารสถานที่ในบริเวณ วังจันทน์ให้เป็นสมบัติของโรงเรียนพิษณุโลกพิทยาคมทั้งหมด โรงเรียนพิษณุโลกพิทยาคมจึงย้ายครั้งที่ 2 มาตั้งอยู่ ณ สถานที่ปัจจุบันมานานถึง 67 ปี ดังนั้นในปี พ.ศ. 2542 โรงเรียนก่อตั้งมามี ”อายุครบ 100 ปี” พอดี
