เศรษฐกิจพอเพียง สามารถนำมาประยุกต์ใช้กับการปฏิบัติตนได้ในทุกระดับ โดยเน้นการปฏิบัติตนบนทางสายกลาง และการพัฒนาอย่างเป็นขั้นตอน

ความพอเพียงที่ประกอบกันขึ้นตามปรัชญาของเศรษฐกิจพอเพียง จะต้องประกอบด้วย 3 คุณลักษณะ พร้อมๆ กัน ดังนี้

(1) ความพอประมาณ หมายถึง ความเหมาะสมของการดำเนินงาน ทั้งในแง่ของขนาดที่ไม่เล็กเกินไปหรือไม่ใหญ่จนเกินตัว แต่เป็นไปตามอัตภาพและสภาพแวดล้อม และในแง่ของจังหวะเวลาที่ไม่เร็วเกินไปหรือไม่ช้าจนเกินไป แต่รู้จักทำเป็นขั้นตอนเพื่อให้การดำเนินงานมีความก้าวหน้า โดยที่ไม่ทำให้ตนเองและผู้อื่นเดือดร้อน

(2) ความมีเหตุผล หมายถึง การพิจารณาที่จะดำเนินงานใดๆ ด้วยความถี่ถ้วนรอบคอบ ไม่ย่อท้อ ไร้อคติ คำนึงถึงเหตุและปัจจัยแวดล้อมทั้งหมด เพื่อให้การดำเนินงานเป็นไปอย่างถูกต้องดีงาม เกิดประสิทธิผล เกิดประโยชน์และความสุข โดยปราศจากการเบียดเบียนตนเองและผู้อื่น

(3) การมีภูมิคุ้มกันในตัวที่ดี หมายถึง การจัดองค์ประกอบของการดำเนินงาน ให้มีสภาพพร้อมรองรับต่อผลกระทบใดๆ อันเกิดจากการเปลี่ยนแปลงทั้งภายนอกและภายในได้เป็นอย่างดี
