อำเภอเกาะคาตั้งขึ้นเมื่อปี พ.ศ. 2457 แต่เดิมมีชื่อว่า อำเภอสบยาว เนื่องจากที่ตั้งอำเภอเดิมตั้งอยู่บริเวณที่ลำน้ำแม่ยาวไหลมาบรรจบกับแม่น้ำวัง อยู่ห่างจากที่ว่าการอำเภอเกาะคาปัจจุบันไปทางทิศเหนือ 1 กิโลเมตร คำว่า "บรรจบ" ชาวบ้านพื้นเมืองเรียกว่า "สบ" จึงขนานนามว่า "อำเภอสบยาว

ทางราชการได้เปลี่ยนชื่ออำเภอสบยาวเป็น อำเภอเกาะคา เพราะที่ว่าการอำเภอตั้งอยู่ในเขตตำบลเกาะคา
