บารม�] หมายถึง การกระทำที่ประเสริฐ การกระทำที่ประกอบด้วยกุศลเจตนาคุณงามความดีที่ควรกระทำ คุณงามความดีที่ได้บำเพ็ญมา คุณสมบัติที่ทำให้ยิ่งใหญ่ เป็นธรรมส่วนหนึ่งที่สำคัญ ซึ่งช่วย เหลือเกื้อกูลให้ผู้ปฏิบัติได้ถึงซึ่งโพธิญาณ

บารมีที่พระโพธิสัตว์บำเพ็ญ คือ

1. ทานบารมี หมายถึง การสละออก การให้ต่างๆ
2. ศีลบารมี หมายถึง การรักษาศีลให้เป็นปกติ ถ้าเป็นฆราวาสก็ถือศีล 5 ถ้าเป็นนักบวชก็ถือศีล 8 ขึ้นไป
3. เนกขัมมะบารมี หมายถึง การออกบวช (หากฆราวาสถือศีล๘ ก็นับเป็นเนกขัมบารมีได้เช่นกัน เพราะเป็นการกระทำเพื่อละกาม)
4. ปัญญาบารมี หมายถึง การกระทำเพื่อเพิ่มปัญญา
5. วิริยะบารมี หมายถึง การกระทำที่ใช้ความเพียรเป็นที่ตั้ง สัมมัปปธานหรือความเพียรที่ถูกต้อง มี 4 อย่างคือ
o สังวรปธาน เพียรระวังไม่ให้บาปเกิดขึ้น
o ปหานปธาน เพียรละบาปที่เกิดขึ้นแล้ว
o ภาวนาปธาน เพียรทำบุญให้เกิดขึ้น
o อนุรักขนาปธาน เพียรรักษาการทำบุญไว้ต่อเนื่อง
6. ขันติบารมี หมายถึง การอดทนอดกลั้นต่อสิ่งต่างๆ
7. สัจจะบารมี หมายถึง การรักษาคำพูด ไม่กลับกลอก แม้ว่าจะต้องสละบางสิ่งเพื่อรักษาคำพูดไว้
8. อธิษฐานบารมี หมายถึง การตั้งมั่นในปรารถนา ตั้งจิตมั่นต่อคำอธิษฐาน
9. เมตตาบารมี หมายถึง มีความรักต่อสัตว์ทั้งหลายในโลกอย่างเท่าเทียม ประดุจมารดารักบุตร
10. อุเบกขาบารมี หมายถึง การวางเฉย การปล่อยวางในสิ่งที่ผิดพลาด ในสิ่งที่แก้ไขไม่ได้ วางเฉยในความทุกข์ของตน
ซึ่งในแต่ละบารมีนั้นแบ่งย่อยเป็น 3 ขั้น ได้แก่

บารมีขั้นต้น คือ เนื่องด้วยวัตถุ และทรัพย์นอกกาย เช่น การสละทรัพย์ช่วยผู้อื่น จัดเป็น ทานบารมี รักษาศีลแม้ว่าจะต้องสูญเสียทรัพย์สินเงินทอง จัดเป็น ศีลบารมี หรือ ยอมถือบวชโดยไม่อาลัยในทรัพย์สิน จัดเป็น เนกขัมบารมี เป็นต้น
บารมีขั้นกลางหรืออุปบารมี คือ เนื่องด้วยเลือดเนื้อ อวัยวะ เช่น การสละเลือดเนื้ออวัยวะแก่ผู้อื่น จัดเป็น ทานอุปบารมี การใช้ปัญญารักษาอวัยวะเลือดเนื้อของผู้อื่น จัดเป็น ปัญญาอุปบารมี การมีความเพียรจนไม่อาลัยในเลือดเนื้อหรืออวัยวะ จัดเป็น วิริยะอุปบารมี มีเมตตาต่อผู้ที่จะมาทำร้ายเลือดเนื้ออวัยวะของตน จัดเป็น เมตตาอุปบารมี หรือ มีความอดทนอดกลั้นต่อผู้ที่จะมาทำลายอวัยวะของตน จัดเป็น ขันติอุปบารมี เป็นต้น
บารมีขั้นสูงสุดหรือปรมัตถบารมี คือ เนื้องด้วยชีวิต เช่น การสละชีวิตเป็นทานแก่ผู้อื่น จัดเป็น ทานปรมัตถบารมี ยอมสละแม้ชีวิตเพื่อจะรักษาคำพูด จัดเป็น สัจจปรมัตถบารมี ตั้งจิตไม่หวั่นไหวต่อคำอธิษฐานแม้จะต้องเสียชีวิต จัดเป็น อธิษฐานปรมัตถบารมี หรือ วางเฉยต่อผู้ที่จะมาทำร้ายชีวิตของตน จัดเป็น อุเบกขาปรมัตถบารมี เป็นต้น
