ตราประจำจังหวัด คือ รูปกอไผ่ริมหนองน้ำ มีภูเขาหัวน้ำอุ่นอยู่เบื้องหลัง เพราะที่ตั้งเมืองหนองคายนี้เดิมชื่อบ้านไผ่เพราะมีกอไผ่อยู่ทั่วไป จึงมีกอไผ่ประกอบในตราประจำจังหวัด และมีหนองน้ำใหญ่ซึ่งชาวบ้านเรียกว่า "หนองคาย" เดิมหนองคายถูกเรียกเพี้ยนมาจากคำว่า "หนองค่าย" ในช่วงรัชกาลที่ 5 จึงมีการเปลี่ยนชื่อเมืองเป็นหนองคายตั้งแต่นั้นมาถึงปัจจุบัน ตราประจำจังหวัดหนองคาย ออกแบบโดย กรมศิลปากร ซึ่งได้เริ่มใช้เมื่อ พ.ศ. 2483 เป็นต้นมา
