สายพันธุ์ของแฮมสเตอร์

แฮมสเตอร์พันธุ์ยุโรป (European Hamster)
เป็นพันธุ์ที่มีขนาดใหญ่ที่สุดในบรรดาแฮมสเตอร์ทั้งหมด คือมีขนาดเกือบเท่ากระต่าย แต่ไม่เป็นที่นิยมเลี้ยงกันเพราะว่ามีนิสัยค่อนข้างดุ และไม่สามารถเลี้ยงให้เชื่องได้ แม้จะลองนำมาเลี้ยงในสวนสัตว์แล้วก็ตาม

เป็นพันธุ์ที่มีขนาดเล็กที่สุด แล้วก็แคระ สมชื่อด้วยความยาวขณะโตเต็มที่แล้วเพียง 7 ซม. เท่านั้น แฮมสเตอร์แคระสามารถแบ่งแยกย่อยได้อีก 3 ชนิดดังนี้

- พันธุ์ไชนีสแคระ (Dwarf Chinese Hamster)
ลักษณะหัวและลำตัวค่อนข้างยาว และเพรียวกว่าแฮมสเตอร์แคระพันธุ์อื่นๆ ส่วนลักษณะของเท้าก็เป็นแบบเดียวกันกับแฮมสเตอร์พันธุ์ซีเรีย คือไม่ค่อยมีขนปกคลุม แต่จะมีหางที่ยาวกว่าพันธุ์ซีเรียอยู่เล็กน้อย มีสีตามธรรมชาติเพียง 2 สีเท่านั้น
