ที่มาของเรื่อง มหาเวสสันดรชาดกเป็นชาดกเรื่องหนึ่งในทศชาดก ซึ่งเป็นเรื่องราวของพระพุทธเจ้าเมื่อเสวยพระชาติเพื่อบำเพ็ญบารมีต่างๆ ๑๐ ประการ ชาดกทั้ง ๑๐ เรื่องมีดังนี้

มหาเวสสันดรนี้ถือกันว่าเป็นชาดกที่สำคัญที่สุด เพราะในชาตินี้พระโพธิสัตว์ทรงบำเพ็ญบารมีครบทั้ง ๑๐ ประการ เป็นพระชาติที่พุทธศาสนิกชนเลื่อมใสศรัทธามากกว่าพระชาติอื่นๆ ในทศชาติ ถึงกับเกิดเป็นประเพณีมีเทศน์มหาชาติกันทั่วไปเป็นประจำทุกปี มหาเวสสันดรชาดกนี้ เป็นเรื่องเล่าซึ่งพระพุทธเจ้าตรัสเล่าให้บรรดาสาวกฟังตามคำทูลขอ

รูปแบบ
