วัตถุประสงค์ของประเพณีสรงน้ำพระธาตุหริภุญชัย มีดังนี้
1.เพื่อเป็นการสักการะพระบรมธาตุ ซึ่งเป็นปูชนียสถานที่เก่าแก่ของวัดพระบรมธาตุหริภุญชัย และนับเป็นโบราณสถานสำคัญทางประวัติศาสตร์ของชาวลำพูนและชาวพุทธทั่วไป
2.เพื่อสักการะพระบรมอัฐิธาตุของพระสัมมาสัมพุทธเจ้า
3.เพื่อเป็นการบูชาเสาหลักเมือง ทั้งนี้เพราะประชาชนลำพูนถือว่าเจดีย์พระบรมธาตุหริภุญชัยเป็นเสาหลักเมืองทำพิธีสรงน้ำพระบรมธาตุหริภุญชัยจึงได้ทำบุญเสาหลักเมืองลำพูนด้วย

กิจกรรมสำคัญ
ประเพณีสรงน้ำพระบรมธาตุหริภุญชัย กำหนดจัดขึ้น ณ วัดพระบรมธาตุหริภุญชัย วรมหาวิหาร อำเภอเมือง จังหวัดลำพูน ในวันขึ้น 15 ค่ำ เดือน 8 เหนือ หรือที่ชาวเหนือเรียกว่า " วันแปดเป็ง " (ระหว่างเดือนพฤษภาคม ซึ่งตรงกับวันขึ้น 15 ค่ำ เดือน 6 ของภาคกลาง) หรือ" วันวิสาขบูชา " กิจกรรมที่จัดขึ้น มีทั้งพิธีราษฎร์และพิธีหลวง มีรายละเอียดโดยสังเขปดังนี้
