ชาวจังหวัดยโสธรร้อยละ ๘๕ ประกอบอาชีพเกษตรกรรม ชาวยโสธรจึงจัดประเพณีบุญบั้งไฟ เป็นการทำบุญประจำปีทุกปีในช่วงเดือนพฤษภาคม ซึ่งเป็นช่วงก่อนฤดูการทำนา เป็นพิธีขอฝนจากพญาแถนให้ฝนตกต้องตามฤดูกาล

พิธีกรรม ประกอบด้วย
๑. การเซิ้งเพื่อขอรับบริจาคทรัพย์สินเงินทอง และอาหารการกิน เพื่อนำมาเป็นทุนในการจัดทำบั้งไฟและเป็นเสบียงสำหรับผู้จัดทำบั้งไฟ
๒. การประกวดขบวนแห่บั้งไฟสวยงาม (บั้งไฟโก้)
๓. การประกวดขบวนรำเซิ้ง
๔. การประกวดธิดาบั้งไฟโก้
๕. การแข่งขันจุดบั้งไฟขึ้นสูง
๖. การแข่งขันจุดบั้งไฟ แฟนซี (บั้งไฟ แสง สี เสียง)
๗. การประกวดกองเชียร์บั้งไฟในวันแข่งขันจุดบั้งไฟขึ้นสูง
