พิพิธภัณฑสถานแห่งชาติ พระนคร จัดเป็นพิพิธภัณฑสถานประเภทประวัติศาสตร์ ประวัติศาสตร์ศิลปะ โบราณคดี และชาติพันธุ์วิทยา ปัจจุบันแบ่งการจัดแสดงออกเป็น 4 ประเภทใหญ่ ๆ คือ

1. ประวัติศาสตร์ชาติไทย จัดแสดงเกี่ยวกับเรื่องราวความเป็นมาของชนชาติไทยและประวัติศาสตร์ชาติไทยโดยสังเขป โดยจัดแสดง ณ พระที่นั่งศิวโมกขพิมาน

2. ประวัติศาสตร์ศิลปะและโบราณคดี เป็นการจัดแสดงวิวัฒนาการของศิลปะและโบราณคดีในประเทศไทย ลำดับตามยุคสมัย โดยจัดแสดงที่อาคารมหาสุรสิงหนาทและอาคารประพาสพิพิธภัณฑ์

3. ประณีตศิลป์และชาติพันธุ์วิทยา จัดแสดงโบราณวัตถุ ศิลปวัตถุ อันเป็นสิ่งที่สร้างขึ้นอย่างประณีต หรือเครื่องมือเครื่องใช้ในชีวิตประจำวันแต่โบราณ เช่น เครื่องเงิน เครื่องทอง เครื่องถม เครื่องมุก เครื่องดนตรี เครื่องไม้จำหลัก เครื่องประกอบการเล่นมหรสพต่าง ๆ เครื่องแต่งกายและผ้าโบราณ เครื่องถ้วย อาวุธโบราณ ราชยานคานหาม ราชรถและเครื่องประกอบการพระราชพิธีพระบรมศพ เป็นต้น โดยจัดแสดงที่อาคารหมู่พระวิมานและโรงราชรถ
