Coaching คือ การช่วยทำให้ผู้ถกโค้ชสามารถตระหนักถึงความสามารถของตนเองในการไปสู่เป้าหมายที่ต้องการได้ ผมชอบความหมายของคำว่า Coaching ที่เขียนไว้เป็นภาษาอังกฤษว่า “Helping people to unlock their potential” ซึ่งก็คือ เป็นการช่วยให้พนักงานได้รู้ว่าตนเองมีศักยภาพอะไรบ้าง เป็นการปลดล็อค ข้อจำกัดในตัวเอง เพื่อจะได้ไปสู่เป้าหมายที่ต้องการ หรืออีกนัยหนึ่งก็คือ เป็นการช่วยให้พนักงานได้เรียนรู้ เป็นการส่งเสริม กระตุ้น และผลักดัน ให้พนักงานได้เรียนรู้เพิ่มเติมด้วยตัวเอง และสามารถที่จะรู้ได้ด้วยตนเอง มากกว่าการมานั่งสอนกันทีละขั้นทีละตอน แบบนี้เราจะเรียกกว่า Teaching มากกว่า


Mentoring คือ เป็นการนำเอาคนที่มีประสบการณ์มากๆ มากให้คำแนะนำถึงแนวทางต่างๆ ในการทำงาน โดยเน้นไปที่ให้คนๆ นั้นเป็นตัวอย่างที่ดี (Role Model) เพื่อที่จะทำให้พนักงานเข้าใจวิธีการและแนวทางในการทำงานมากขึ้น แต่คำว่า Coaching นั้น คนที่เป็น Coach อาจจะไม่จำเป็นต้องรู้คำตอบทุกอย่าง แต่ต้องมีความสามารถที่จะช่วยให้พนักงานหาคำตอบนั้นได้ด้วยตนเอง
