ดังนั้นในยุคนี้เองได้มีการรวมกลุ่มของผู้ที่สนใจศึกษาวิเคราะห์ภาษาโดยพยายามให้การศึกษาภาษามีลักษณะเป็น “ศาสตร์” ในตัวเอง ซึ่งเรียกว่า “ภาษาศาสตร์” หรือ “Linguistics” โดยเน้นว่าการศึกษาภาษาศาสตร์ควรมุ่งให้มีหลักการตามแนววิทยาศาสตร์ ดังที่ พิณทิพย์ ทวยเจริญ (๒๕๔๔ : ๕ – ๑๐) ได้ขยายความต่อไปนี้
