สมัยประวัติศาสตร์ของอินโดนีเซียเริ่มต้นด้วยการค้นพบ “จารึกแห่งกาลิมันตันตะวันออก” ในเขตกูไต (Kutai) อายุราวคริสต์ศตวรรษที่ 5 ซึ่งมีรูปแบบอักษรคล้ายอักษรอินเดีย และอาจเข้ามาพร้อมๆ กับที่ศาสนาฮินดู เข้ามาในอินโดนีเซีย

ศาสตราจารย์ เจ. จี. เดอ คัสพาริส (Prof. J.G. de Casparis) หนึ่งในผู้เชี่ยวชาญเกี่ยวกับวัฒนธรรม อินโดนีเซีย ได้สรุปพัฒนาการอักษรโบราณในอินโดนีเซียโดยแบ่งเป็นช่วงๆ ของรูปแบบอักษรและลำดับยุคสมัย ดังนี้

อักษรปัลลวะ

อักษรกวิ
