ผลการศึกษาพบว่า มลพิษทางน้ำหมายถึง น้ำที่เสื่อมคุณภาพ หรือน้ำที่มีคุณสมบัติเปลี่ยนไปจากธรรมชาติ ทั้งนี้เนื่องมาจากมีมวลสารสารพิษ หรือสารปนเปื้อนต่างๆ ปะปนเกินมาตรฐานที่กรมควบคุมมลพิษกำหนด จนทำให้ไม่สามารถนำน้ำไปใช้ประโยชน์ได้จนมีสภาพที่
เลวลง และส่งผลต่อการดำรงชีวิตของมนุษย์และสิ่งมีชีวิตในน้ำส่วนสาเหตุที่ทำให้เกิดมลพิษทางน้ำ คือ น้ำทิ้งจาก อาคารบ้านเรือนและชุมชน โดยเฉพาะในชุมชนที่มีประชากรอาศัยอยู่หนาแน่น โดยทุกครัวเรือนจะปล่อยน้ำทิ้งลงสู่รางระบายน้ำสาธารณะ และน้ำทิ้งเหล่านั้นจะไหลลงสู่แหล่งน้ำธรรมชาติต่อไป น้ำทิ้งจากโรงงานอุตสาหกรรม ซึ่งเป็นน้ำเสียจากกระบวนการผลิต เช่น การล้างวัตถุดิบ การทำความสะอาดเครื่องจักร เป็นต้น มลพิษจากน้ำทิ้งของโรงงานอุตสาหกรรม จะมีลักษณะสมบัติแตกต่างกันตาม ชนิดของผลิตภัณฑ์ กระบวนการผลิต และอื่นๆ โดยทั่วไป โรงงานอุตสาหกรรม ประเภทเดียวกัน และมีกระบวนการผลิตที่คล้ายคลึงกัน จะมีลักษณะสมบัติของน้ำเสีย และน้ำทิ้งที่คล้ายคลึงกัน เช่น โรงงานผลิตสารเคมี น้ำทิ้งก็จะมีสารเคมีที่มีฤทธิ์เป็นกรด-ด่าง ทำให้เกิดการปนเปื้อนในแหล่งน้ำ เมื่อมีการนำน้ำจากแหล่งดังกล่าวมาใช้ จะก่อให้เกิดอันตรายต่อสุขภาพทั้งในระยะสั้นและระยะยาว ถ้าไปสะสมในร่างกายจะมีความเสี่ยงต่อภาวะไตวายสารเคมีที่มาจากอุตสาหกรรมต่างๆ ซึ่งมักจะปล่อยออกมาปนเปื้อนกับแหล่งน้ำดิบ และบางครั้งจะมีการเติมสารเคมีบางชนิดลงในน้ำด้วย และผลกระทบที่ได้จากการเกิดมลพิษทางน้ำ คือ น้ำจะมีสีและกลิ่นที่น่ารังเกียจ ทำให้น้ำเป็นอันตรายต่อสิ่งมีชีวิตในน้ำ เกิดมลพิษต่อสิ่งแวดล้อม เป็นแหล่งของเชื้อโรคต่างๆ สู่มนุษย์ สัตว์ และพืช อีกทั้งยังเป็นอันตรายต่อสุขภาพ รวมทั้งมลพิษทางน้ำจะส่งผลให้มีการทำลายทัศนียภาพในเรื่องสิ่งแวดล้อมและการท่องเที่ยวด้วยมีสีและกลิ่นที่น่ารังเกียจ ไม่สามารถใช้อุปโภคและบริโภคได้
