คำทักทายที่ใช้ในภาษาอินโดนีเซียมีทั้งคำทักทายที่ใช้ทั่วไปซึ่งใช้ได้ทั้งในกรณีที่พบกันอย่างเป็นทางการหรือไม่เป็นทางการ นอกจากนั้นยังมีคำทักทายที่ใช้ทักทายสำหรับคนที่สนิทกัน คำทักทายพื้นฐานใช้โดยทั่วไปในภาษาอินโดนีเซียจะคล้ายกับในภาษาอังกฤษ คือ จะแบ่งการทักทายไปตามแต่ละช่วงเวลาของแต่ละวัน ดังนี้

Selamat pagi [เซอ-ลา-มัต ปา-กี] แปลว่า สวัสดีตอนเช้าหรืออรุณสวัสดิ์ คำนี้ใช้เหมือนกันกับในภาษามาเลเซีย ส่วนคำทักทายในตอนอื่น ๆ ของวันใช้ต่างไปจากในภาษามาเลเซียดังนี้ Selamat siang [เซอ-ลา-มัต เซียง] แปลว่า สวัสดีตอนกลางวัน คำว่า siang [เซียง] แปลว่า กลางวัน Selamat sore [เซอ-ลา-มัต โซ-เร] แปลว่า สวัสดีตอนเย็น คำว่า sore (โซ-เร) หมายถึง ตอนเย็น Selamat malam [เซอ-ลา-มัต มา-ลัม] แปลว่า สวัสดีตอนกลางคืน คำว่า malam [มา-ลัม] แปลว่า กลางคืน

ส่วนในชีวิตประจำวันคนอินโดนีเซียจะมีคำทักทายกันแบบง่าย ๆ คือใช้คำว่า Halo [ฮา-โล] หรือ Hai [ไฮ] ที่มักใช้ในหมู่เพื่อนหรือคนที่สนิทกันมาก ใช้ในทำนองเดียวกับภาษาอังกฤษ

ในกรณีที่พบกันครั้งแรกหรือเป็นการพบกันอีกครั้งหลังจากที่ไม่ได้พบกันเป็นเวลานาน ชาวอินโดนีเซียจะนิยมถามด้วยคำถามว่า Apa kabar? [อา-ปา กา-บัร] แปลว่า สบายดีหรือ หรือพูดประโยคว่า Bagaimana kabarnya? [บา-ไก-มา-นา กา-บัร-ญา] แปลว่า เป็นอย่างไรบ้าง คนที่ถูกทักอย่างนี้จะตอบด้วยคำว่า Kabar baik [กา-บัร ไบก์] แปลว่า สบายดี นอกจากนั้นยังมีประโยคทักทายที่ใช้สำหรับคนที่สนิทกันซึ่งไม่ได้พบกันมานานคือ Ke mana saja? [เกอ มา-นา ซา-จา] แปลว่า ไปไหนมาบ้าง,ไปไหนมา มีความหมายว่า คุณไปอยู่ที่ไหนมา ทำไมจึงไม่มีข่าวคราวมาบ้างเลย

การทักทายในภาษาอินโดนีเซียเรียกว่า Salam [ซา-ลัม] หากเป็นการรู้จักกันครั้งแรกปรกติแล้วจะทักทายโดยการจับมือกัน ส่วนมากจะบอกชื่อตัวเองเพื่อเป็นการแนะนำตัวไปด้วย ลักษณะเหมือนการ shake hand ของชาวตะวันตก
