สมุนไพร หมายถึง "ผลิตผลธรรมชาติ ได้จาก พืช สัตว์ และ แร่ธาตุ ที่ใช้เป็นยา หรือผสมกับสารอื่นตามตำรับยา เพื่อบำบัดโรค บำรุง ร่างกาย หรือใช้เป็นยาพิษ"[1] หากนำเอาสมุนไพรตั้งแต่สองชนิดขึ้นไปมาผสมรวมกันซึ่งจะเรียกว่า ยา ในตำรับยา นอกจากพืชสมุนไพรแล้วยังอาจประกอบด้วยสัตว์และแร่ธาตุอีกด้วย เราเรียกพืช สัตว์ หรือแร่ธาตุที่เป็นส่วนประกอบของยานี้ว่า เภสัชวัตถุ พืชสมุนไพรบางชนิด เช่น เร่ว กระวานกานพลู และจันทน์เทศ เป็นต้น พืชเหล่านี้ถ้านำมาปรุงอาหารเราจะเรียกว่า เครื่องเทศ
