ที่ผ่านมาเราได้กล่าวถึงคำว่า “โลจิสติกส์ (Logistics)” และ “โซ่อุปทาน (Supply Chain)” อยู่บ้างจนอาจทำให้ผู้อ่านหลายคนสงสัยว่าคำสองคำนี้แตกต่างกันอย่างไร ที่จริงแล้วเราอาจกล่าวได้ว่าโลจิสติกส์และโซ่อุปทานนั้นแทบจะแยกกันไม่ออก และถ้าหากจะอธิบายคำสองคำนี้ก็คงต้องเริ่มต้นจากภาพกว้าง ๆ กันก่อนด้วยทฤษฎีโซ่คุณค่า (Value Chain)
Michael E. Porter ได้ให้ทฤษฎีเกี่ยวกับการสร้างโซ่คุณค่า (Value Chain)ของบริษัทเพื่อที่จะเพิ่มขีดความสามารถทางการแข่งขันว่าเราสามารถแบ่งกิจกรรมที่ก่อให้เกิดการเพิ่มมูลค่าได้เป็นสองส่วนด้วยกันคือกิจกรรมหลัก (Primary Activities) และกิจกรรมสนับสนุน (Support Activities) ดังที่เราจะเห็นได้ในภาพ
